Chapter 5 - THE COLLAPSE OF THE EAST WINGThe shockwave hit the subterranean vault like a physical blow. Chunks of ancient stone, mortar, and dust rained down from the vaulted ceiling as the subterranean tunnels groaned under the immense weight of the collapsing mansion above.

"Get down!" Miller roared, covering his head as a massive slab of granite crashed down only feet away from where he stood.
On the floor, Nathaniel wrestled the remote control out of Vivian’s white-knuckled grip, smashing it against a sharp rock until the plastic casing splintered and the internal circuit board sparked and died.
"You fool!" Vivian coughed, spitting dust and blood as Nathaniel pinned her wrists against the cold stone floor. "The timer was already set! It wasn't just a remote—it was a dead-man's switch!"
"Shut up!" Nathaniel snarled, hauling her to her feet by the collar of her ruined designer dress. He shoved her toward Detective Miller. "Cuff her! Get her out of here through the drainage exit before the whole structure caves in!"
"And you, Mr. Hawthorne?" Miller yelled over the deafening roar of collapsing beams echoing from the floors above.
"I'm going to find my daughter!" Nathaniel turned and sprinted back toward the dark, smoking labyrinth of the lower service stairs.
Thick, acrid black smoke was already billowing down the stone corridors, stinging his eyes and burning his lungs with every breath. The fire alarm shrieked a high-pitched, electronic wail that vibrated inside his skull.
"Chloe!" Nathaniel coughed, pressing his sleeve against his mouth as he fought his way upward toward the ground level. "Chloe, answer me!"
"Daddy!"
A faint, terrified cry echoed from the direction of the music room—part of the East Wing that had just taken the brunt of the explosive blast.
Nathaniel didn't hesitate. He threw his shoulder against the warped oak door of the music room, splintering the lock and bursting into a room engulfed in thick smoke and licking orange flames. The grand piano had been knocked sideways by the blast, crushing a antique display case, and a massive ceiling beam hung precariously overhead by a single twisted strand of iron rebar.
Beneath a heavy velvet curtain, huddled near the corner window, was little Chloe, coughing violently and clutching her favorite stuffed animal to her chest.
"Chloe!" Nathaniel sprinted across the burning hardwood floor, heat radiating fiercely against his face. He scooped the little girl into his arms just as the ceiling beam snapped completely loose and crashed down onto the exact spot where she had been sitting a second earlier.

"I've got you, sweetheart! Hold on to me!" Nathaniel shouted, turning on his heel and shielding the child’s body with his own as he fought his way back through the smoke-choked hallway toward the front terrace.
With one final, desperate surge of adrenaline, Nathaniel kicked open the shattered French doors of the drawing room and burst out onto the sprawling front lawn, collapsing onto the dew-soaked grass as the entire East Wing of the Hawthorne estate imploded in a magnificent, terrifying ball of fire.
