Chapter 6 - THE ASHES OF DECEPTIONHours later, the sun began to peek over the jagged cliffs of the Maine coastline, casting a pale, golden light over the smoldering ruins of the Hawthorne mansion. Fire trucks lined the winding drive, their hoses hissing as they continuously sprayed water onto the charred skeletal frame of the East Wing.

Paramedics wrapped a thermal blanket around Chloe’s shoulders, feeding her warm sweet tea as she sat safely in the back of an ambulance. Nathaniel stood a few feet away, leaning against the side of a police cruiser, his face streaked with soot, his suit ruined, staring blankly at the smoking rubble.

Detective Miller walked over, holding a clear plastic evidence bag containing the crushed pearl necklace, the shattered glasses, and the ruined detonator.

"The fire department managed to contain it before it reached the main structural core of the mansion," Miller said quietly, handing Nathaniel a cup of black coffee. "The underground vault was completely sealed off from the blast zone. All of Eleanor’s personal safe-deposit boxes, her original legal documents, and the hard drives containing the financial audits are intact."

Nathaniel took the cup, his hands steadying slightly. "And Vivian?"

"She’s currently strapped into a transport van on her way to the county holding facility," Miller replied, taking a sip of his own coffee. "She tried to bite a paramedic’s arm off when they tried to put her in the back. She’s facing charges of first-degree premeditated murder, domestic terrorism, arson, financial fraud, and identity theft. With the digital trail, the security footage, and the eyewitness testimony from your daughter... she’ll never see the outside of a maximum-security prison cell for the rest of her life."

Nathaniel closed his eyes, taking a long, slow breath of the crisp morning air. The nightmare was over. The monster who had infiltrated his home and taken his mother’s life was gone.

"How is Chloe?" Miller asked, glancing toward the ambulance.

"She’s shaken up, but resilient," Nathaniel said softly. "She’s a Hawthorne. She has her grandmother’s strength."

He walked over to the ambulance, kneeling down beside his daughter. Chloe looked up at him, her tear-stained face smudged with soot, her small hands trembling slightly.

"Is the bad lady gone, Daddy?" she whispered.

Nathaniel reached out, gently brushing a lock of hair from her forehead, and offered a soft, reassuring smile.

"She’s gone, sweetheart," Nathaniel promised. "And she’s never coming back."
