Chapter 4 - THE INTERROGATION ROOMTwo hours later, inside the stark, fluorescent-lit interrogation room at the downtown precinct, Derek sat staring at a flat-screen monitor playing the loop of him severing the brake line.

His lawyer—a high-priced corporate defense specialist—sweated profusely across the metal table.
"Mr. Mercer, the digital forensics report confirms the video metadata matches the exact timestamp of the vehicle's onboard computer diagnostic logs," the defense attorney whispered frantically. "There's no way to suppress this. The cloud upload was automated."
Derek slammed his cuffed hands against the table, his face red with fury. "Find a loophole! Sue them! Claim illegal wiretapping!"
The heavy door swung open, and Detective Vance walked in, tossing a thick manila folder onto the table.
"You might want to save your breath for the murder trial, Mr. Mercer," Vance said, leaning against the doorframe with a cold smirk. "Because the dashcam footage wasn't the only file synced to that cloud account."
Derek froze. "What are you talking about?"
"We just executed a search warrant on your laptop at your townhouse," Vance replied evenly. "Turns out, you didn't just tamper with your wife's car. You also searched 'how to induce kidney failure via heavy metal poisoning' three weeks before Claire was hospitalized."

Derek’s breath hitched. The color drained entirely from his face.
He hadn't just murdered Natalie. He had been slowly poisoning me, too, making sure there would be no one left to inherit the estate when Natalie was gone.
