Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL WARDThree days later, I sat in my hospital room at New York Presbyterian, watching the morning news broadcast on the wall-mounted television.

"BREAKING: BILLIONAIRE HEIR INDICTED FOR MURDER AND ATTEMPTED POISONING IN MERCER ESTATE CASE."

Footage of Derek in an orange jumpsuit, hiding his face from flashing paparazzi cameras as squad cars escorted him to Rikers Island, looped across the screen. His life of luxury, stolen wealth, and arrogant cruelty was officially over.

The door to my room clicked open.

A young doctor walked in holding a clipboard, his face lit up with a brilliant smile.

"Claire, I have some incredible news," Dr. Evans said, pulling up a chair beside my bed. "We received an emergency organ donor match late last night through the priority registry. A compatible kidney has cleared all medical protocols. We can schedule your transplant surgery for tomorrow morning."

I stared at him, my heart skipping a beat.

For months, I had been tethered to the dialysis machine, fighting just to stay alive long enough to expose Derek. I had prepared myself for the end.

Instead, a new beginning was waiting.

"Is... is it real?" I whispered, tears finally slipping down my cheeks—not tears of grief or pain, but tears of pure, unadulterated survival.

"It's real," Dr. Evans confirmed, squeezing my hand. "You're going to live, Claire. And you're going to take your life back."
