Chapter 3 - THE FIXER'S VISITTwo days after giving birth, while Sarah was downstairs filing formal federal affidavits with the district attorney, a soft knock echoed on my hospital room door.

I instinctively clutched my baby tighter against my chest, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Who is it?"

The door clicked open, and a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal-grey suit stepped inside. He had slicked-back silver hair, piercing cold eyes, and a terrifyingly polite smile. He didn't wait for an invitation; he walked right in and locked the door behind him.

"Mrs. Vance. Or should I say, Clara," the man said smoothly, pulling up a chair and sitting down uninvited. "I’m Richard Sterling. Marcus’s legal counsel."

"Get out of my room," I spat, my voice trembling with adrenaline. "If you take one more step toward me, I’ll press the emergency panic button and have the marshals drag you out in handcuffs."

Sterling chuckled softly, pulling a manila folder from his leather briefcase. "Ah, the marshals. Yes, your sister loves playing the hero. But let's look at the chessboard realistically, Clara. You’re a traumatized mother with a history of prenatal anxiety. Marcus is a pillar of this community. Do you honestly think a jury of local suburbanites is going to believe that a respected philanthropist built a literal dungeon in his basement?"

He slid a single document across the bedside table.

"Sign this non-disclosure and comprehensive settlement agreement," Sterling continued, his voice dropping into a venomous whisper. "You drop all criminal charges against Marcus and Eleanor. You grant Marcus full, uncontested custody of the child. In exchange, my client will generously provide you with a lump sum of two hundred thousand dollars and a one-way bus ticket out of state. You can start over somewhere nice. Idaho, perhaps?"

I looked down at the paper. It was a complete surrender. A contract trading my daughter's life for pocket change, wrapped in legal intimidation.

"And if I refuse?" I asked, my voice steadying as a cold, calculating rage replaced my fear.

Sterling leaned forward, his smile vanishing, revealing the shark underneath. "If you refuse, my legal team will systematically dismantle your credibility. We will exhume every private medical record, leak fabricated stories about your mental state to every major tabloid, and drag this trial out for ten agonizing years. You will be bankrupt, broken, and ultimately, you will still lose the child. Marcus always wins, Clara. It’s simply how the world works."

I stared at him for a long, agonizing moment. Then, slowly, a thin, humorless smile spread across my face.

"You think Marcus is the only one who recorded things, Mr. Sterling?" I whispered.

Sterling paused, his eyes narrowing slightly. "What are you talking about?"

Before I could answer, the door behind him was violently kicked open, crashing against the wall with a deafening bang.

Sarah stood in the doorway, a smoking-hot legal subpoena in one hand and a team of federal agents flanking her.

"Mr. Sterling," Sarah announced, her voice dripping with lethal satisfaction, "you are currently trespassing in a federal witness protection zone, attempting to coerce a protected victim. Hand over your briefcase, turn around, and put your hands behind your back. Your client’s house of cards just caught fire."
