Chapter 7 - THE FINAL SHOWDOWN AT THE HARBORThe salt-heavy wind whipped across the rusted metal docks of the municipal cargo yards as the black-and-white federal cruisers killed their sirens a quarter-mile away, rolling in with their lights dark to maintain tactical surprise.

The colossal bulk of an unregistered container ship, The Pacific Titan, hummed loudly against the pier, its massive loading crane swinging a final crate toward the cargo hold.

Julian Vance stood on the upper deck, clutching a leather briefcase stuffed with bearer bonds and false passports, barking orders at the ship’s captain in frantic Spanish.

"Move faster! Cast off the lines now!" Julian yelled, his silver hair disheveled by the offshore gale.

"Federal Agents! Freeze! Nobody moves!"

Sarah’s voice cut through the roar of the ship's engines like a gunshot. From behind stacked shipping containers, a dozen heavily armed federal marshals and tactical officers emerged, weapons raised, completely cutting off the gangway.

Julian froze, his face turning an ugly shade of purple as he stared down the barrel of Sarah’s rifle.

"It’s over, Julian," Sarah called out, stepping forward into the wash of the ship's floodlights. "The accounts are frozen. The warrants are signed. Your empire is gone."

Julian’s eyes darted frantically around the deck. He realized there was no escape route. But instead of raising his hands, a twisted, desperate grin spread across his face. He reached slowly inside his tailored wool coat.

"Don't do it, Julian. Put your hands on the railing!" David shouted, stepping up beside Sarah.

"If I go down, the Vances take everyone with us!" Julian roared, pulling a heavy nickel-plated revolver from his coat and leveling it directly not at Sarah, nor David—but straight toward the dock where I stood holding my baby inside the reinforced command vehicle.

Before Julian’s finger could squeeze the trigger, a sharp, deafening crack echoed across the harbor.

It wasn't Sarah’s rifle.

From the shadow of a crane gantry fifty yards away, a single, precise shot blew the revolver out of Julian’s hand, spinning him hard against the steel railing.

As Julian screamed, clutching his shattered, bleeding hand, federal officers swarmed the gangway, wrestling him to the deck and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

I looked up toward the crane gantry. Standing there in the shadows, lowering a service rifle, was a familiar local sheriff's deputy—one of the few honest cops in the county who had secretly leaked the initial dispatch logs to Sarah months ago, risking everything to ensure justice finally arrived.
