Chapter 5 - THE SIEGE IN THE DARK"Get down!" Sarah roared instantly, dropping her coffee mug as it shattered against the hardwood floor. In one fluid motion, she drew her service weapon and shoved me and the baby into the reinforced interior bathroom—the designated panic room of the safehouse.

"Sarah, what's happening?" I whispered, my heart slamming against my ribs as I clutched my infant daughter tightly to my chest.

"We’ve been compromised," Sarah snapped, bolting the heavy steel door of the bathroom from the inside and checking the tactical display on her encrypted tablet. "The local cell towers just jammed. Federal backup is twenty minutes out. We’re on our own."

Outside the safehouse, heavy boots crunched across the gravel driveway.

Through the small, bulletproof bathroom vent, the sound of muffled voices cut through the midnight air.

"Sweep the perimeter. Leave no witnesses. Julian wants all digital copies wiped before the feds arrive with the new search warrants," a harsh, gravelly voice ordered.

Julian. The invisible puppet master. Marcus wasn't just a sadistic monster; he was part of a generational syndicate that protected its assets through intimidation, arson, and murder. And now, they had tracked us to the safehouse to silence the only witness who could bring down their entire financial empire.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Heavy battering rams slammed against the front door of the safehouse. Wood splintered, glass shattered, and muffled shouts echoed from the living room.

Sarah didn't hesitate. She positioned herself directly in front of the bathroom door, her pistol leveled at eye level, her breathing slow and controlled.

"Clara," Sarah said without turning her head, "listen to me very carefully. If anything happens to me, you take the emergency sat-phone from the top shelf, crawl through the sub-floor utility tunnel behind the shower, and run toward the state park treeline. Do not look back."

"No! We stay together!" I cried, tears streaming down my face.

"Clara, look at your daughter," Sarah whispered fiercely. "She needs a future, not a martyr. Now shut your eyes and stay quiet."

The living room door crashed inward with an explosive roar. Gunfire erupted—sharp, deafening pops of silenced submachine guns tearing through drywall and shattering furniture. Sarah returned fire, her weapon barking rhythmically through the open doorway, dropping the first two intruders who breached the hallway.

But footsteps were closing in fast. More than two men.

Suddenly, a heavy, metallic thump echoed against the bathroom door. Someone was planting an explosive charge on our only shield.
