Chapter 6 - DARKNESS AND CONFESSIONSInside the reinforced concrete safe room, the emergency lighting flickered on, casting a dim, amber glow over rows of emergency rations, water tanks, and monitors displaying live feeds of the loft outside.

The boys were crying softly, burying their faces in Mara’s jacket. She sat on the cold floor, holding all four of them tightly against her chest, whispering soothingly into their dark curls.
I stood by the monitor control console, watching the four tactical operatives sweep through my destroyed living room. They were tearing expensive artwork off the walls, ripping cushions apart, and systematically dismantling my home.
"They're looking for the drives," Mara said quietly, her voice echoing in the enclosed space. She gently kissed the top of Micah's head before looking up at me. "Julian... who sent them? Was it your mother?"
"My mother is ruthless, but she usually operates through lawyers, boardrooms, and checkbooks," I said, my eyes narrowed as I watched the men on the screen communicate via tactical headsets. "This... this is military-grade wetwork. This is someone else. Someone within Whitaker Enterprises who stands to lose everything if my mother and I both go down."
"Who?"
"Jonathan Vance," I muttered, the name leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. "My mother’s chief legal counsel and executive vice president. For thirty years, he's been the shadow keeping all of our family's skeletons locked in the closet. If anyone knows where the bodies are buried—literally—it's him."
Mara looked up at me, her expression hardening with a resolve that matched my own. "Then we can't wait for the FBI. We can't wait for the authorities. If Vance has a private army at his disposal, the police are completely compromised."
I walked over and sat down on the cold floor beside her and the boys. Milo looked up at me, his little hand reaching out to touch the side of my face, his fingers gently tracing the exact same jawline and left cheek dimple I possessed.
"Are we going to be okay, Julian?" Milo whispered, using my first name because he had heard his mother do it, though the word 'Dad' seemed to hover unspoken in the air between us.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, placing my large hand over his small one. "I promise you, Milo. Nobody will ever hurt you or your brothers again. I swear it on my life."
Mara looked at me, a soft, vulnerable emotion breaking through the armor she had worn all morning. "You really mean that, don't you?"
"I spent six years living a lie, Mara," I said softly, meeting her gaze across the dim light. "I let my family push you away. I let them steal my life, my love, and my children. I am not letting them take the rest of our future."
She shifted closer, resting her head briefly against my shoulder while the boys leaned against us both, forming a protective circle of warmth inside the cold vault.
"When we get out of here," Mara whispered, "we're going to finish what we started six years ago."
May you like
"And how is that?" I asked, a grim smile touching my lips.
"We're going to burn the Whitaker empire to the ground, and build something real from the ashes."
