Chapter 4 - THE SPIDER'S WEBBy Monday evening, the Sterling Manor had transformed into a fortress of quiet paranoia. Margaret Sterling was operating at peak efficiency, reviewing financial ledgers, calling corporate allies, and ensuring every single board member was lined up to vote in favor of the upcoming merger.

In her private study on the third floor, Margaret poured herself a glass of vintage scotch. She felt invincible. For a brief moment on Saturday, when Ethan had walked in on that wretched scene, she had feared her entire empire would collapse. But men—even her own son—were predictable creatures. Ethan was emotional, blinded by his attachment to Ava, but ultimately, he was a Sterling. He valued power, legacy, and money above all else. He would fall in line, just as she planned.
Knock, knock.
"Enter," Margaret commanded, not looking up from her ledger.
The heavy mahogany door swung open. It wasn't Ethan, nor was it a maid. It was Marcus Vance, Ava’s estranged uncle and a minority shareholder in the Vance Corporation—a man Margaret had been secretly corresponding with for months.
"Marcus," Margaret said, standing up and offering a rare, genuine smile. "I didn't expect you until tomorrow."
Marcus Vance stepped into the light. He was a tall, silver-haired man with cold, calculating eyes that mirrored Margaret’s own. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and took a seat without being invited.
"I didn't come to socialize, Margaret," Marcus said, his voice flat. "I came to make sure your little coup is going according to schedule. If Ethan finds out about my involvement in transferring Ava’s shares to you... my reputation in the corporation is finished."
"Relax, Marcus," Margaret scoffed, pouring him a glass of scotch. "Ethan is swallowing the bait hook, line, and sinker. By tomorrow night, Ava will sign the proxy transfer, the board will vote me in as majority chair, and you will get your twenty percent cut of the Vance assets just like we agreed."
Marcus accepted the glass, though he didn't drink. "And Ava? What happens to her once she signs?"
Margaret’s smile turned razor-sharp. "A private sanatorium in Switzerland. Beautiful views, excellent care, and zero legal capacity to ever contest the papers. She’ll live out her days quietly, far away from my son."
"Brilliant," Marcus murmured, though a flicker of unease crossed his face. "Just... make sure there are no loose ends. Ethan is smarter than you give him credit for."
"Ethan is my son," Margaret said coldly. "He bleeds Sterling blood. He knows which side his bread is buttered on."
What Margaret didn't know—what neither of them knew—was that on the other side of the heavy oak door, pressed flat against the wall in the darkened hallway, stood Lena.

Lena held a high-end digital audio recorder clutched tightly in her hand, the red recording light blinking steadily in the dark. Every single word of their conspiracy had been captured in crystal-clear high definition.
Lena smiled darkly, tucked the recorder into her pocket, and slipped silently down the corridor like a ghost in the night.
