Chapter 6 - THE SHATTERED THRONEMargaret Sterling staggered back until the edge of her own massive mahogany desk pressed against her lower back. Her chest heaved, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps as her eyes darted wildly around the room—from the glowing television screen still replaying her incriminating voice, to Marcus Vance cowering near the exit, to her son Ethan standing like an executioner, and finally to Ava, standing tall, proud, and completely unbroken right in front of her.

"You... you can walk," Margaret whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "All those months... the wheelchair... the physical therapy... it was all an act?"
"Not an act, Margaret. Recovery," Ava corrected sharply, her voice ringing with icy authority. "Your sedatives slowed me down, yes. But Ethan’s private doctors found the antidote weeks ago. We simply waited for you to write your own confession."
"This is insane!" Marcus Vance barked, lunging toward the double doors in a desperate bid to escape. "You have no proof linking me to—"
Click.
The study doors swung open wide. Two uniformed police officers, accompanied by a senior federal investigator holding an arrest warrant, stepped directly into the room, blocking Marcus’s path.
"Marcus Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy, and racketeering," the lead investigator announced, stepping forward and snapping steel handcuffs onto the stunned man's wrists before he could utter another word.
Marcus thrashed, his face turning purple with rage. "You can't do this! This is a setup! Margaret, do something!"
Margaret didn't even look at him. Her eyes were locked entirely on her son.
"Ethan," Margaret whimpered, her formidable facade cracking completely, revealing the desperate, cornered coward beneath. "I raised you. I gave you everything. You’re turning your own mother over to the authorities? For her?"
Ethan looked down at the woman who had birthed him, his eyes completely devoid of warmth or pity.
"You didn't raise me, Mother. You engineered me," Ethan said quietly, his voice slicing through the tense air. "You murdered Ava's father by tampering with those brakes. You tried to murder Ava. And you thought you could steal everything she owned. Family isn't defined by blood, Margaret. Family doesn't try to destroy each other."
He nodded to the investigator. "Take her away."
Two officers stepped forward, gently but firmly grasping Margaret’s arms. For the first time in her life, the untouchable matriarch of the Sterling empire fought back, screaming obscenities, thrashing against the cuffs, her face twisted in a mask of primal fury as she was dragged out of the study and down the grand hallway, her muffled screams echoing fading away into the rainy night.
As the heavy oak doors closed behind them, the study descended into a profound, suffocating silence.
Ava let out a long, shuddering breath, her legs suddenly trembling from the adrenaline. Ethan was by her side in a fraction of a second, catching her in his arms and gently lowering her back into the armchair.

"You okay?" Ethan asked softly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her forehead.
Ava looked up at him, a genuine, radiant smile breaking through her exhaustion. "Never better, husband. Never better."
