Chapter 3 - THE GHOST IN THE PENTHOUSEForty-eight hours later, Laney Lennox opened her eyes to the sound of rhythmic, steady monitors and the scent of expensive white lilies.

She wasn't in a standard recovery ward. The room was a private VIP suite on the top floor of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital—a wing that cost more per night than a luxury sports car, completely cordoned off by private security guards wearing black suits and earpieces bearing the unmistakable insignia of Lennox Global.
She tried to move, but her body felt like it had been crushed under the weight of a freight train. Every muscle ached. Her throat was bone-dry.
"Don't try to sit up just yet," a deep, velvety, yet chillingly cold voice commanded from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Laney turned her head slowly.
Asher sat in a high-backed leather armchair, the morning sun cutting sharp lines across his tailored gray suit. He wasn't wearing a tie, and the top buttons of his shirt were open, revealing the faint remnants of dried blood from Malik’s accident. In his arms, cradled with shocking tenderness, was the little girl. The baby boy was asleep in a motorized bassinet beside the bed.
"Asher..." she choked out, her voice cracking like dry earth.
He didn't move for a long, agonizing moment. He simply sat there, staring at her with eyes that looked like frozen slate—hard, analytical, and devoid of the warmth she remembered from the early years of their marriage.
"The doctor says you're going to make a full recovery," Asher said evenly, his voice devoid of inflection. "The twins are healthy. Malik has been cleared to return home with a slight limp that will heal in a month. Everyone is safe, Laney."
She swallowed hard, a cold knot forming in her stomach. "Where are they?"
"Right here. In this room. In my custody." He stood up, slowly pacing toward the bed, the baby resting securely against his broad chest. He stopped a foot away, looking down at her with a gaze that could cut glass. "Seven months ago, you left a note on the kitchen island. Seven words. This life is killing me. I’m leaving. You cleaned out your personal accounts, left your wedding ring on the counter, and vanished into thin air."
"Asher, you don't understand—"
"Quiet," he cut her off, his voice dropping into a register that made the air in the room freeze. "For seven months, I tore this city apart looking for you. I hired private investigators, intelligence operatives, and financial auditors. I tracked every credit card, every transaction, every flight out of the country. And you know what turned up?"
Laney shrank back against the pillows, her breath catching in her throat.
"Nothing," Asher whispered, leaning closer, the smell of expensive cologne and danger washing over her. "You completely vanished from the grid. No digital footprint. No paper trail. As far as the world was concerned, Laney Lennox had evaporated. And yet, you were pregnant with my children. Twins."

He placed the baby girl gently into the bassinet beside her brother, then turned back to the bed, placing both hands on the mattress and leaning over her so she had nowhere to run.
"So let’s skip the part where you pretend you had a good reason," Asher said, his eyes burning into hers. "Who were you hiding from, Laney? Because if someone threatened my wife and my children... I don't care if they are hiding at the bottom of the ocean or inside the highest government office in Washington. I will hunt them down, tear their world apart, and watch them burn. Start talking."
