Chapter 8 - The Crimson Sunset — "They Are Paying For Their Sins, But I Am Booking a One-Way Ticket to Paradise!"

It has been six months since the 48-hour ultimatum.

The little white house with the roses is completely peaceful now.

Matthew avoided prison time by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of identity theft, but his reputation is destroyed. He was sentenced to three years of intensive probation and ordered to pay back the full $25,000 credit line directly to the bank through mandatory wage garnishment. Because he couldn't afford the luxury sports car payments anymore, the bank repossessed it, leaving him with nothing but his public bus pass.

Jessica left him three weeks after his arrest. She couldn't handle living in her mother’s cramped spare room without money or credit. Last I heard, she was working at a low-end retail mall, her designer lifestyle entirely replaced by the reality of minimum wage.

My sister Helen made a miraculous recovery. She is sitting right across from me on the porch swing as the sun begins to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in beautiful shades of crimson and gold.

"Are you sure you want to sell the house, Eleanor?" Helen asks, sipping her tea from the blue chipped mug.

"I'm not selling it to just anyone, Helen," I say, smiling as I look at the legal document in my lap. "I'm leasing it to a lovely young family with three small children who promised to take care of the roses. They need a home, and this house deserves to be filled with laughter again, not ghosts."

"And what about you?"

I reach into my bag and pull out two printed airline tickets.

"You and I are spending the next six months in a villa overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the south of France," I say. "I spent seventy-two years being polite, being a mother, being a caretaker. Now, I’m going to spend the rest of my life being free."

I look back at the little white house one last time as the porch lights click on automatically.

It was no longer a battlefield.

It was a victory monument.
