CHAPTER 4 — Someone Tried to Silence the Only Witness... But Her Final Words Changed Everything

The brick was still spinning across the wooden floor when the room fell silent.

Broken glass covered the living room.

Valeria instinctively stepped in front of Doña Teresa.

Outside...

A black motorcycle sped away before anyone could see the rider's face.

Only the fading roar of its engine remained.

Valeria slowly picked up the folded note.

Five words.

Stop asking about 2008... or die.

Her hands trembled.

This was no childish prank.

Someone knew exactly where she was.

And someone had been watching her.

Doña Teresa suddenly collapsed into a chair.

Her face had turned pale.

For years, she had lived quietly, avoiding questions about the past.

Now...

The past had come looking for her.

Valeria knelt beside her.

"Please..."

"Tell me what's happening."

The elderly woman stared at the broken window for several long seconds.

Then she whispered,

"They never stopped searching."

"Who?"

"The people who stole that little boy's life."

Valeria frowned.

"I don't understand."

"You will..."

"But not today."

Before she could continue...

She began coughing violently.

Her breathing became shallow.

Valeria immediately called for an ambulance.

Across the city...

Mateo hadn't slept.

The mysterious sentence written behind the photograph refused to leave his mind.

Never let them discover who he really is.

Who was "they"?

Who was "he"?

Why had someone hidden his identity?

His phone suddenly rang.

Private number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Only slow breathing.

Then...

An elderly male voice whispered,

"If you want the truth..."

"Visit Santa Clara Cemetery."

"Row Nine."

"Grave Twenty-Seven."

The call ended.

Mateo immediately called the number back.

It no longer existed.

His security chief entered moments later.

"Sir..."

"We traced yesterday's meeting."

"What did you find?"

The chief placed several photographs on the desk.

One showed Roberto speaking to a man wearing a gray baseball cap.

Another showed Roberto receiving a thick envelope.

A third photograph froze Mateo's blood.

Roberto was shaking hands...

With one of Grupo Cúspide's biggest corporate rivals.

"Who is he meeting?"

The chief answered quietly.

"We don't know."

"But someone inside your company has been leaking information."

Mateo slowly looked up.

"So this isn't just about the neighborhood."

"No, sir."

"This started long before the redevelopment project."

Meanwhile...

At the hospital...

Doctors stabilized Doña Teresa.

The emergency physician approached Valeria.

"Physically she'll recover."

"But emotionally..."

"She appears terrified."

Valeria sat beside the hospital bed.

Hours passed.

Finally...

The old woman opened her eyes.

She reached weakly toward Valeria.

"Come closer..."

Valeria leaned in.

"I don't have much time."

"Listen carefully."

She slipped a tiny brass key into Valeria's hand.

The number 18 was engraved on it.

"What does it open?"

"A locker."

"At Vicente Guerrero Elementary."

Valeria looked confused.

"The school still has lockers?"

"No..."

"Not for students."

"For teachers."

"It has never been emptied."

She squeezed Valeria's hand.

"Everything is inside."

"The letters."

"The photograph."

"And..."

Before she could finish...

The heart monitor suddenly began beeping wildly.

Doctors rushed into the room.

"Nurse!"

"She's crashing!"

Valeria was pushed into the hallway.

The doors slammed shut.

She stood frozen.

Praying.

Minutes felt like hours.

Finally...

The doctor stepped outside.

His expression said everything.

"I'm sorry."

"We couldn't save her."

Valeria's knees nearly gave out.

The only woman who knew the truth...

Was gone.

Or so everyone believed.

That same afternoon...

Mateo arrived at Santa Clara Cemetery.

The cemetery caretaker recognized him immediately.

"The gentleman who called you was here yesterday."

Mateo's pulse quickened.

"Where is he now?"

The caretaker shook his head.

"He died last night."

Mateo froze.

"What?"

"He asked me to give you this..."

The old man handed him a weathered envelope.

Across the front was written in shaky handwriting:

For the boy with the red bracelet.

Mateo carefully opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

It showed him as a child...

Standing beside a smiling woman.

Not his mother.

On the back were eight chilling words.

She wasn't your mother. She protected you.

The world seemed to stop.

Everything he believed about his childhood...

Everything...

Had been a lie.

Across town...

Roberto sat inside an expensive restaurant.

Far too expensive for a neighborhood activist.

Across from him sat the mysterious man in the gray baseball cap.

A briefcase rested between them.

"You failed."

Roberto frowned.

"Valeria knows almost nothing."

"That's already too much."

The man slid another envelope across the table.

Inside...

Fifty thousand dollars in cash.

"Finish this."

Roberto stared at the money.

"You mean..."

"If she opens Locker Eighteen..."

"We all lose."

Roberto slowly nodded.

"I'll handle it."

As he reached for the envelope...

Neither man noticed the waitress quietly serving coffee nearby.

She accidentally overheard only one sentence.

"If Valeria survives until Friday..."

"Our secret dies forever."

The waitress lowered her eyes.

But she had already memorized both men's faces.

Late that evening...

Valeria finally returned home from the hospital.

She locked the door.

Closed every curtain.

Then placed the small brass key on the table.

She couldn't stop staring at it.

Locker 18.

What could possibly be hidden there for twenty-two years?

She reached for her phone.

There was only one person she could think of.

The billionaire.

For reasons she couldn't explain...

She felt he was somehow connected.

Her finger hovered over his business card from the community meeting.

Should she call him?

Or trust no one?

Before she could decide...

The lights suddenly went out.

The apartment was plunged into complete darkness.

A slow knock echoed from the front door.

Three knocks.

Silence.

Then three more.

Valeria whispered,

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Only a deep male voice from the other side.

"I know you have the key."

"Open the door..."

May you like

"If you want to stay alive."
