CHAPTER 5 — She Opened the Door... And Came Face-to-Face With the Boy She Had Saved 22 Years Earlier

The apartment remained completely dark.
Only the distant glow of streetlights slipped through the curtains.
Valeria stood frozen beside the kitchen table.
The brass key to Locker 18 rested in her trembling hand.
Again...
Three slow knocks echoed through the apartment.
Knock...
Knock...
Knock...
The mysterious voice returned.
"Valeria..."
"I know you're inside."
Her heart pounded.
No one should have known she had come home from the hospital.
No one except...
Roberto.
Quietly, she picked up the heavy iron frying pan from the stove.
She took one careful step toward the door.
Another.
Another.
Her fingers wrapped around the doorknob.
With one deep breath...
She pulled the door open.
Standing in the hallway...
Was Mateo Castillo.
Alone.
No bodyguards.
No chauffeur.
No expensive entourage.
Only the billionaire...
Holding an old, faded photograph in his hand.
For several seconds...
Neither of them spoke.
It felt as though twenty-two years had disappeared.
Mateo looked at her with eyes filled not with arrogance...
But with gratitude.
"I think..."
"I owe you dinner."
Valeria blinked.
"What?"
He slowly held up the childhood photograph.
"You fed me for six months."
"I've been trying to repay you ever since."
The world seemed to stop.
She stared at the photograph.
Then at the faded red thread tied around his wrist.
Her breathing became uneven.
"No..."
"It can't be..."
Mateo smiled sadly.
"I kept my promise."
"I came back."
Before Valeria could answer...
A loud crash exploded from downstairs.
Both rushed toward the apartment balcony.
Two masked men were forcing open the building's entrance.
One carried a crowbar.
The other held a pistol.
Mateo immediately pulled out his phone.
"My security team is three minutes away."
Valeria looked horrified.
"They're here for the key."
Mateo looked at her.
"What key?"
Instead of answering...
She placed the small brass key into his hand.
"If anything happens to me..."
"Don't let them have it."
Mateo closed his fingers around it.
"I won't let anything happen to you."
The attackers reached the second floor.
Heavy footsteps thundered through the hallway.
Apartment doors slammed shut as frightened neighbors hid inside.
Mateo quietly locked Valeria's apartment door.
He searched the room.
"There."
A narrow fire escape led onto the rooftop.
"We leave now."
"But my neighbors—"
"My people are already evacuating them."
She looked surprised.
"You planned this?"
"No."
"I prepare for everything."
The two climbed onto the roof just as the apartment door below splintered apart.
The masked men stormed inside.
Finding nothing.
One shouted angrily.
"They're on the roof!"
The chase began.
Rain suddenly poured over the city.
The old rooftop became dangerously slippery.
Valeria nearly lost her footing.
Mateo caught her before she fell.
For one brief second...
Their eyes met.
A forgotten memory flooded Valeria's mind.
A hungry little boy slipping on muddy pavement.
A little girl grabbing his hand.
"Be careful."
Exactly the same words.
Exactly the same expression.
Exactly the same eyes.
Tears filled hers.
"It really is you..."
Mateo nodded.
"I never forgot."
The gunshot echoed across the rooftops.
Concrete exploded beside them.
The attackers were firing.
Mateo immediately pushed Valeria behind a brick chimney.
"Stay down!"
Another shot.
Glass shattered nearby.
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
The masked men exchanged nervous glances.
"We're out of time."
One pointed directly at Mateo.
"Shoot him!"
Before the trigger could be pulled...
Powerful headlights flooded the rooftop.
Three black armored SUVs screeched into the alley below.
More than a dozen security officers rushed out.
The attackers fled across neighboring buildings.
One escaped.
The other slipped on the rain-soaked roof.
His pistol skidded across the concrete.
He disappeared into the darkness.
Twenty minutes later...
Inside one of Mateo's secure vehicles...
Valeria wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.
Neither of them spoke for several minutes.
Finally...
She looked at him.
"You really searched for me?"
Mateo laughed quietly.
"I bought twelve buildings hoping I'd find you."
"You what?"
"I hired investigators."
"I visited your old school."
"I never stopped."
Valeria's eyes filled with tears.
"But..."
"Why?"
Mateo slowly untied the faded red thread from his wrist.
He placed it beside the matching piece she still carried in her pocket.
The two halves fit together perfectly.
Like they had never been separated.
"You saved my life."
"When everyone else saw a homeless child..."
"You saw a person."
"I promised I'd come back."
"I was just late."
For the first time in twenty-two years...
Valeria cried openly.
Not because she was afraid.
Because someone had remembered.
Back inside the abandoned apartment...
The masked men searched every drawer.
Every cabinet.
Every hiding place.
Nothing.
The leader slammed his fist against the wall.
Then his phone rang.
"Report."
"The key is gone."
A long silence followed.
Then the cold voice answered.
"Then activate Roberto."
"He'll get close to Valeria."
"He always does."
The leader hesitated.
"There's one problem."
"What?"
"She's with Mateo now."
Silence.
Long...
Dangerous silence.
Finally...
The caller spoke five chilling words.
"Then kill them both together."
The next morning...
Mateo brought Valeria to one of his safest properties—a secluded estate outside Mexico City protected by former military security officers.
As they entered the library...
An elderly woman suddenly stood from her chair.
The moment she saw Valeria...
She burst into tears.
"You..."
"I've waited twenty-two years to meet you."
Valeria looked confused.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled through her tears.
"My name is Elena."
"I was the nurse who carried Mateo out of the hospital..."
"...the night someone tried to murder him."
The room fell silent.
Mateo slowly turned toward her.
"What did you just say?"
Elena took a deep breath.
"The story you know about your childhood..."
"...is only half the truth."
She reached into her handbag...
And carefully removed a sealed envelope marked:
