CHAPTER 2 — The Dead Woman Who Planned Everything

The phone had not rung in fifteen years.

It rang exactly three times.

Every executive in the building turned pale.

Because everyone knew what office it belonged to.

Office 1701.

The private office of Grand Summit Bank's founder.

A man officially declared dead fifteen years earlier.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The ringing echoed through the silent building.

Maxwell slowly stood.

"Who..."

"...activated Black Protocol?"

No one answered.

Not because they didn't want to.

Because they genuinely didn't know.

Black Protocol wasn't part of employee training.

Most staff believed it was only an urban legend.

A story told to new executives.

A security system that supposedly protected something so valuable only five people in history had ever triggered it.

Until today.

By an eleven-year-old homeless girl.

Heavy steel doors slid down over every public entrance.

CLICK.

CLICK.

CLICK.

Customers screamed.

"What is happening?"

"Why are they locking us in?"

Security guards received new instructions through their earpieces.

"Nobody leaves."

"I repeat..."

"Nobody."

Outside...

Chicago police vehicles arrived within minutes.

Then armored SUVs.

Then black government sedans with darkened windows.

Arya stared through the glass.

"Did I do something wrong?"

Elena immediately knelt beside her.

"No."

"You did something important."

Meanwhile...

The mysterious telephone continued ringing.

Maxwell finally walked toward the private elevator.

Only board members possessed access.

The elevator accepted his fingerprint.

Floor 17.

Office 1701.

The door slowly opened.

Dust covered everything.

The room looked untouched by time.

One telephone sat neatly on an antique wooden desk.

Still ringing.

Maxwell picked it up.

"Hello?"

Silence.

Then...

A recorded female voice.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...then Melissa Nolan failed."

Maxwell froze.

He knew that name.

Twenty-two years ago...

Melissa Nolan had been the youngest forensic accountant ever hired by Grand Summit.

Brilliant.

Fearless.

The woman who disappeared after exposing a financial conspiracy involving politicians, hedge funds, and organized crime.

Official records claimed she resigned.

Maxwell suddenly remembered something much worse.

She never resigned.

She vanished.

Downstairs...

Arya quietly asked Elena,

"Can I have my card back?"

Elena smiled gently.

"Of course."

She reached toward the computer.

Before she touched it...

The monitor changed again.

New text appeared.

WELCOME HOME,

MISS ARYA NOLAN.

PRIMARY HEIR VERIFIED.

TRUST SUCCESSFULLY PRESERVED FOR 15 YEARS.

Elena's heart skipped.

"Heir?"

Arya frowned.

"Heir to what?"

Nobody answered.

Because Maxwell came running from the elevator.

Completely different.

His face had lost every trace of arrogance.

He walked directly toward Arya.

Then...

To everyone's absolute shock...

One of the most powerful billionaires in America...

Dropped to one knee.

"I'm sorry."

The bank exploded with whispers.

Maxwell Grant...

Apologizing?

To a homeless child?

"I failed your mother."

Arya stared.

"You knew Mom?"

Maxwell closed his eyes.

"She once saved this entire bank."

"What?"

"She exposed the people stealing billions."

Arya shook her head.

"My mom was just an accountant."

"No."

Maxwell whispered.

"She was the bravest woman I've ever met."

Across the street...

Inside a black SUV...

A man wearing leather gloves watched everything through binoculars.

He smiled.

"So..."

"The girl is alive."

He picked up a satellite phone.

"Begin Phase Two."

"Bring me the child..."

"...before Maxwell tells her who she really is."

The line disconnected.

None of them noticed...

A second sniper had already climbed onto the rooftop across from Grand Summit Bank.

His rifle wasn't aimed at Maxwell.

It wasn't aimed at the vault.

May you like

It was aimed directly...

At Arya.
