Chapter 5: The Hero Was the Devil All Along

The entire street stared at the giant television screen.

There he was.

Jonathan Hayes.

Perfect smile.

Perfect suit.

Perfect reputation.

The reporter's voice echoed through the city.

"The billionaire who has donated over two billion dollars to hospitals, orphanages, and veterans' charities is expected to announce his campaign for President this afternoon."

The crowd applauded.

Some people even clapped on the sidewalk.

Daniel couldn't.

His hands were shaking.

Richard looked up from the pavement and laughed.

"Do you understand now?"

"You spent five years hating the wrong man."

The detective grabbed Richard by the collar.

"If Hayes is involved, prove it."

Richard smiled.

"I can't."

"Because dead men can't testify."

Everyone frowned.

"What does that mean?" Daniel asked.

Richard slowly looked at him.

"My father didn't leave only one recording."

"He left another."

"The one that names Jonathan Hayes."

The detective's eyes widened.

"Where is it?"

Richard's smile disappeared.

"I don't know."

"Jonathan made sure it vanished the night my father died."

Daniel clenched his fists.

"So that's why you framed me."

Richard nodded.

"You were the only person my father trusted."

"If people believed you were a criminal..."

"No one would ever believe anything you said."

The detective immediately ordered his officers.

"Get a warrant."

"I want Hayes' offices, homes, private jet, bank records—everything."

But before anyone moved...

Every police radio exploded with static.

Then a voice came through.

"All units."

"Stand down immediately."

"This investigation has been transferred to the Federal Special Crimes Division."

The detective frowned.

"I never requested a transfer."

Neither had anyone else.

Black SUVs rolled onto the street.

Men in dark tactical uniforms stepped out.

No badges.

No names.

Only black jackets marked:

FEDERAL TASK FORCE

The officer leading them flashed a badge for less than a second.

"We're taking custody of Richard Carter."

The detective blocked his path.

"Under whose authority?"

The man answered calmly.

"Director Jonathan Hayes."

Silence.

Daniel felt ice run through his veins.

Jonathan Hayes wasn't even a government official.

So why...

...did federal agents seem to answer to him?

The detective reached for his radio.

It was dead.

Every phone nearby suddenly lost signal.

No calls.

No internet.

No livestreams.

Within seconds, every video people had recorded mysteriously disappeared.

One teenager stared at his phone in disbelief.

"My recording..."

"It's gone."

Another checked hers.

"So is mine."

The crowd erupted in confusion.

Daniel realized what was happening.

Someone wasn't just controlling people.

They were controlling information.

The tactical commander approached Richard.

Without handcuffs.

Without reading his rights.

Almost...

...like they were rescuing him.

Richard stood and smirked at Daniel.

"I told you."

"You can't fight a man who owns the truth."

As the convoy prepared to leave, the little boy suddenly shouted.

"WAIT!"

Everyone turned.

The child ran toward Daniel and pulled something from inside his backpack.

A faded envelope.

"My mom told me to give you this only if bad men came."

Daniel opened it with trembling hands.

Inside was a tiny brass key.

An address.

And one handwritten sentence.

"Locker 317. Grand Central Station. Trust no one."

Before Daniel could ask another question...

A deafening explosion ripped through the parking garage across the street.

Fire burst into the sky.

Windows shattered.

People screamed and ran in every direction.

The shockwave knocked Daniel and his daughter to the ground.

The envelope slipped from his hand...

But the brass key remained tightly clenched in his fist.

When the smoke finally began to clear...

Richard Carter was gone.

The black SUVs had vanished.

So had every member of the so-called Federal Task Force.

It was as if they had never existed.

The detective stared at the burning garage, then at the key in Daniel's hand.

His voice was barely a whisper.

"If Hayes wants that key this badly..."

"...whatever is inside Locker 317 could destroy the most powerful man in America."

Daniel closed his fingers around the key.

For five years, he had been running from his past.

Now...

May you like

He was running toward the one secret that could bring an empire crashing down.

To be continued...
