CHAPTER 1: THE HORSE THAT REFUSED TO SAY GOODBYE

The funeral of sixty-year-old farmer William Carter began on a cold, gloomy morning.

Dark clouds covered the sky above the small rural cemetery. Villagers gathered silently around the freshly dug grave, their faces heavy with sadness. William had spent his entire life working the land. He was known as an honest man who never cheated anyone, never refused help to a neighbor, and never left an animal hungry.

Standing beside the coffin was his wife, Helen.

Her hands trembled as she clutched a handkerchief soaked with tears.

Their son Michael stood nearby, staring at the ground.

The priest softly recited prayers while the mourners lowered their heads.

Then suddenly...

A loud, terrifying neigh shattered the silence.

Everyone turned.

A massive dark-brown stallion burst through the cemetery gates.

Thunder.

William's beloved horse.

For fifteen years, the farmer and the stallion had been inseparable. Villagers often joked that Thunder understood William better than most people did.

But today something seemed terribly wrong.

Thunder's eyes were wild.

His breathing was frantic.

Several men rushed forward.

"Stop him!"

But the horse fought like a creature possessed.

He ignored every command.

Ignored every person.

Ignored every attempt to restrain him.

Instead, he charged directly toward William's coffin.

The crowd stepped back.

Thunder circled the coffin repeatedly, snorting and pawing the ground.

Then he began striking the lid.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The sound echoed across the cemetery.

Crack.

A small fracture appeared.

People gasped.

The horse became even more agitated.

As if he knew something nobody else knew.

As if he was desperately trying to warn them.

Then Thunder rose onto his hind legs.

With unbelievable force, he slammed both front hooves onto the coffin.

CRACK!

The lid split open.

Silence consumed the cemetery.

Everyone stared.

Then a woman screamed.

The coffin was empty.

William Carter's body was gone.

For several seconds nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody understood what they were seeing.

Then panic exploded through the crowd.

Helen nearly collapsed.

Michael's face turned completely white.

The priest dropped his Bible.

Someone whispered:

"Who would steal a dead man?"

But the real question was far worse.

If William wasn't inside the coffin...

May you like

Where was he?

And why had Thunder known before everyone else?
