Chapter 3 - Decoding the Past

I spent the rest of the night barricaded in my apartment, deadbolts thrown, curtains drawn tight. I laid the contents of the hospital bag across my bed and went to work.

The leather-bound ledger was a chronological diary spanning over four decades. As I flipped through the brittle pages, written in Gloria’s tight, obsessive handwriting, a horrifying picture emerged.

Gloria wasn't always an elderly nursing home resident. In the late 1970s, she had been Gloria Vance—a brilliant biochemist working in the elite research labs of Vance Industries, then run by Arthur Vance and his ruthless father.

According to the diary, Gloria had discovered that a revolutionary medication being fast-tracked for global distribution—a drug meant to treat degenerative neurological diseases—had catastrophic, lethal side effects that the company was intentionally covering up. When Gloria threatened to go public, Arthur's father didn't just fire her; they orchestrated a nightmare.

They staged a tragedy. They told her that her newborn daughter had died during childbirth due to complications. They threatened to kill her if she ever spoke a word about the research.

Broken and terrified, Gloria fled into the underground, changing her identity, living in cheap motels, and eventually ending up in the quiet, anonymous halls of our nursing home. But she never stopped investigating. She spent thirty years tracking down the truth, building a digital vault of evidence.

And then my eyes fell on the modern flash drive.

I plugged it into my battered laptop. It took a few moments to bypass a multi-layered encryption protocol using a password I found hidden inside the back cover of the ledger—Gloria’s original employee ID number combined with her daughter's supposed birthdate.

The screen flickered. A single folder popped up, containing three high-definition video files and thousands of digitized corporate emails, internal memos, and financial wire transfers.

I clicked on the first video file.

The video opened with a timestamp from three weeks ago. It showed an elderly woman—looking frail, but with eyes burning with fierce determination—sitting in a dimly lit room facing a webcam.

It was Gloria.

"If you are watching this, Eric," Gloria's recorded voice said, speaking directly to me through the screen, "it means I didn't survive long enough to tell you everything face-to-face. I am sorry for dragging you into this. Arthur Vance is a monster who killed hundreds of clinical trial patients to push his drug to market, and he buried my child—yes, my daughter is alive, Eric—to keep me silent."

I gasped, pausing the video. Her daughter is alive?

I hit play again.

May you like

"My daughter was adopted out under a falsified identity the night I was told she died. Her name is Dr. Maya Lin—she is currently the chief lead researcher at Vance Industries' own biomedical division, completely unaware that the man she calls her mentor and savior is the monster who stole her from her true mother. You need to find her, Eric. Give her the flash drive. Expose them both before they silence her, too."

The weight of the mission crashed down on my shoulders. I wasn't just a grieving widower anymore. I was the sole guardian of a ticking time bomb that could bring down a multi-billion-dollar empire.
