Chapter 1 - The General's CounterattackThe hospital corridor felt suddenly airless, choked by the arrogant smirk plastered across Gregory Ferguson’s face. They thought a few tailored suits and a rolled-up list of local political connections shielded them from consequence. They looked at my service uniform and saw only a badge of employment, a government worker they could intimidate with a well-placed bribe or a whispered threat to a corrupt judge.

They had no idea what Fort Liberty actually forged.
I didn't raise my voice. In the military, screaming is a sign that you’ve lost control of the situation. Absolute calm, however, strikes a deeper terror into the guilty.
"Connections," I repeated, my voice dropping an octave, carrying the metallic edge of a parade ground command. "Let’s talk about connections, Mr. Ferguson."
I reached into the inner pocket of my crisp black military jacket, pulling out a heavy, secure satellite-linked tactical smartphone. I didn't look at Patricia or Nicholas; my gaze remained locked on Gregory, who was already shifting uncomfortably under the sheer weight of my stare.
"Major Vance," I spoke clearly into the receiver as the call connected instantly.
"Colonel! Reporting, Ma'am," a sharp, crisp voice boomed through the speaker, loud enough to echo off the sterile hospital tiles.
"I need an immediate priority code-zero intervention," I ordered, my eyes never leaving Patricia’s suddenly tightening face. "Deploy the Joint Force Legal Assistance Detachment, along with the Provost Marshal’s Special Investigation Division, to St. Bernard Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina. We have a active domestic violence felony involving civilian perpetrators who believe their municipal ties grant them immunity."
Nicholas’s smirk vanished. "What the hell are you doing? You can't bring the military into this! This is a domestic civil matter!"
"Domestic?" I stepped forward, closing the distance between us until the gold insignia on my collar was inches from his expensive silk tie. "You locked an American citizen—my daughter—inside a guest house, stripped her communication devices, and subjected her to physical torture. Under federal jurisdiction, because this involves a dependent of a high-ranking active-duty service member under specific base-housing and interstate family protection statutes, this just crossed lines your money can't erase."
Patricia’s face drained of color, her diamond earrings catching the flickering fluorescent lights as she stepped back. "You’re bluffing. You’re just an officer. You don't have that kind of reach off-base."

"General Harrison is a personal friend of mine," I replied softly, tapping the screen to put the call on speaker. "And as it turns out, he’s currently chairing the Department of Defense Inter-Agency Task Force on Domestic Security and Corporate Corruption. Want to say hello?"
Before any of them could speak, the heavy glass doors at the end of the emergency department burst open.
