Chapter 2 - THE RETURN TO LAKE SHORE DRIVEBy 3:00 AM, Dante’s black sedan pulled silently into the underground parking garage beneath our apartment building on Lake Shore Drive.

Dante killed the engine and the headlights simultaneously. He reached across the center console, placing his hand over mine. His touch was firm, steady, and entirely devoid of the suffocating, possessive weight I had endured with Lucas.

"You stay in the car," Dante instructed, his tone leaving zero room for argument. "I have men clearing the lobby and the service elevators. You are only going up there to retrieve what is yours."

"No, Dante," I said, unbuckling my seatbelt and looking him straight in the eye. "Lucas knows me. If he sees security guards, he'll burn the drive in the kitchen sink. I have to go up alone. I have to let him think I came crawling back."

Dante stared at me for a long, agonizing moment, weighing the risk. Slowly, he nodded, sliding a small, encrypted key fob into my palm. "If you don't text me within twenty minutes, I am coming through that front door with a sledgehammer."

"Understood."
