Chapter 10 - The New FrontierSix months later, the autumn leaves were turning gold and crisp across the Arizona landscape.

I stood on the back porch of my new home—a quiet, sunlit house nestled against the foothills, far away from the gated country clubs and toxic suburban mansions of my parents' world.
My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was an official encrypted notification from the Department of the Army Military Intelligence Command. My promotion to Major had officially cleared, accompanied by a commendation for exceptional analytical integrity in civilian cooperation.
I smiled, setting the phone down as footsteps echoed softly behind me.
"Mommy? Look! I drew a picture of our new house!"
I turned around. Standing in the doorway was Paisley, now two and a half years old, holding a bright crayon drawing of a house with a giant sun, a smiling dog, and two stick figures holding hands. Her cheeks were smooth, clear, and glowing with health, completely free of any shadows or scars.
I dropped to one knee, scooped her up into my arms, and spun her around as she erupted into bright, musical giggles that chased away every ghost of the past.
"Oh, sweetheart, this is the most beautiful masterpiece I've ever seen," I whispered, pressing a long, tender kiss to her forehead. "Where should we hang it?"
"Right here," she said, tapping her little hand proudly against my heart. "Right where it's safe."
I held her tight against my chest, looking out toward the horizon where the sun was setting in a brilliant blaze of gold and amber. The old world was gone, burned down to the ashes of its own deceit. But out of the ruins, we had built something unbreakable.
