Chapter 5 - The Voice That Shattered the RoomThe courtroom speakers amplified every single sound with agonizing clarity.

First came the ambient chatter of the backyard birthday party—the clinking of plastic cups, the laughter of distant relatives, the cheerful music playing from a Bluetooth speaker.

Then, the audio shifted.

My voice, calm and controlled: "What did you just do?"

Seth’s arrogant, sneering voice, ringing out loud and clear across the silent courtroom: "She’s a little monster. Somebody had to teach her a lesson."

The sharp, echoing crack of flesh hitting flesh.

And then—most devastating of all—Paisley’s heart-wrenching, terrified scream, cutting through the audio like a knife, followed by my mother’s cold, dismissive interruption: "That’s enough, Kallie. Stop making such a scene."

The courtroom was so dead silent you could hear the air conditioner humming through the vents.

Every single eye in the room slowly turned away from the audio speakers and locked onto my parents sitting in the gallery. My mother covered her mouth with both hands, tears finally spilling down her cheeks as she realized the horror of what she had endorsed was now echoing in front of a judge, a prosecutor, and a room full of strangers. My father closed his eyes, his head sinking slowly into his hands.

Judge Sterling slowly leaned back in his leather chair. His face was thunderous.

He looked down at Arthur Pendelton, who was standing beside Seth with his mouth slightly open, completely speechless, having realized too late that he had walked his client directly into a buzzsaw.

"Mr. Pendelton," Judge Sterling said, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "Is that your client's voice on the recording?"

Pendelton swallowed hard, looking desperately at Seth, who was now shaking like a leaf. "Your Honor... the context—"

"I asked you a direct question, counselor," the judge barked, leaning forward over the bench. "Is that your client confessing to striking a two-year-old child on the audio record?"

"...Yes, Your Honor," Pendelton whispered defeatedly.

Judge Sterling picked up his gavel.

"Motion to dismiss denied. Bail for the defendant is hereby revoked. Given the severity of the unprovoked assault, the clear evidence of witness tampering and conspiracy to cover up a felony involving a minor, Mr. Harrison is remanded immediately into custody pending a fast-track grand jury indictment."

Bang.

The gavel came down like the judgment of a higher power.

Before Seth could even open his mouth to protest, two bailiffs stepped up behind him, grabbed his arms, and slapped steel handcuffs around his wrists. As they hauled him away toward the back holding cells, he looked back at my parents with wild, betrayed eyes, screaming out a sentence that tore the final shreds of our family apart.

"Mom! Dad! Tell them! You said we had to stick together! You told me to hit her if she got out of hand!"

The entire courtroom froze.

My mother let out a strangled, breathless gasp and slid completely out of her wooden pew, collapsing in a heap onto the courtroom floor.
