Chapter 11 - The Inheritance Audit

The morning sun hit the dining room table, illuminating a stack of thick legal binders that looked less like family paperwork and more like a corporate merger. Grandma Eleanor sat at the head of the table with a red pen in hand, crossing out lines of old asset distributions she had drafted back when she still trusted her eldest son.

“If we leave the trust structured this way, Arthur’s legal separation from Linda won't protect the remaining property from future liabilities,” I noted, sliding a separate ledger sheet across the mahogany surface.

Grandma didn’t look up from her notes. “Arthur isn't getting another dime, trust or no trust. We are rewriting the whole estate from scratch. Every cent goes into a managed annuity for your future, and whatever is left over goes straight to the historical preservation fund downtown.”

She capped her pen with a sharp, definitive click.

“He thinks because he shares my blood that he’s entitled to the fruit of my entire life’s labor. He forgot a very simple truth, Daniel: I built this house with your grandfather before Arthur even learned how to walk. I can dismantle his expectations just as easily.”
