Chapter 16 - The Unraveling

The settlement terms Arthur was hoping for never materialized. Over the next month, the walls closed in completely. The state’s compliance division uncovered a second, smaller shell company Arthur had tried to set up using his sister’s maiden name—an attempt to siphon funds from an old family trust that hadn't been touched in decades.
Linda officially filed for a contested divorce, citing financial ruin and deliberate deception, and submitted her own sworn affidavit detailing how Arthur had pressured her into participating in the nursing home drop-off scheme under the guise of “protecting the family estate.”
I dropped by Grandma’s house every weekend to help with maintenance. The gutters were cleaned, the new security cameras were fully operational, and the spring bulbs she had planted back in December were finally breaking through the dark earth in vibrant shoots of green and yellow.
“You know, Daniel,” Grandma said one Saturday afternoon, handing me a glass of lemonade as we stood on the back patio. “People spend their whole lives worrying about what they’re going to leave behind for their children. They forget that the most important thing you can leave behind is your integrity.”
“You left plenty of that,” I smiled, taking a sip. “Along with a very clear warning label for anyone trying to pull a fast one.”
