Chapter 2 - The House of CardsBy noon, Ricardo had stormed out of the hospital, threatening everything from immediate divorce to public humiliation. Valeria didn't flinch. She called her lawyer, Marcus Vance, a sharp, unyielding bulldog who specialized in high-asset separations and asset protection.

"Marcus, I need the prenuptial agreement pulled up, along with all financial records from the last three years," Valeria instructed as she paced the hospital room. "I want to track every single wire transfer sent to Ricardo’s family accounts. I want forensic audits on the joint accounts, and I want an eviction notice served to Ricardo by tomorrow afternoon."

"Consider it done, Valeria," Marcus replied, his voice calm and reassuring. "And by the way, congratulations on waking up. Sounds like you've finally decided to cut out the cancer."

Meanwhile, across town, panic had descended upon the family estate.

Doña Carmen was pacing her living room, her gold bracelets clinking furiously as she shouted into her smartphone. "What do you mean her accounts are locked to us? Mariana, check it again! There has to be a glitch!"

Mariana, pale and shaking, stared at her banking app. The screen flashed red: Transaction Declined. Account Suspended.

"Mom... she actually did it," Mariana whispered, her voice cracking. "The transfer didn't go through. And... and she's demanding the 450,000 pesos back. She sent a formal legal notice to my email ten minutes ago."

Doña Carmen froze, her face contorting with rage. "That ungrateful little parasite! We welcomed her into this family! We tolerated her cold personality! And now she thinks she can starve us? Ricardo! Where is Ricardo? Call your brother right now. He needs to put that woman in her place before she ruins our lives!"

What Carmen didn't know—what none of them knew—was that Valeria’s wealth didn't just come from her salary. Three months prior, Valeria had quietly restructured her entire corporate portfolio, shifting her primary business holdings into an irrevocable trust where Ricardo had zero legal rights.

The gravy train hadn't just stopped; it had derailed, and the cliff was straight ahead.
