Chapter 8 - The Final ConfrontationFollowing the court ruling, Ricardo managed to corner Valeria in the courthouse hallway as she was leaving with Marcus.

"Are you happy now?" Ricardo hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of rage and utter defeat. "You destroyed us. You destroyed my family. You left my mother and sister with nothing!"
Valeria stopped, turning slowly to face him. She looked at him not with hatred, but with complete and utter indifference.
"No, Ricardo," Valeria corrected softly. "I didn't destroy your family. I simply stopped feeding the monster you all created."
She stepped closer to him, her eyes sharp and unyielding.
"You never loved me, Ricardo. You loved what I could provide. You loved the checkbooks, the cars, the status, and the silence I kept while your family drained my life away. The day I caught pneumonia and nearly died in that hospital bed while you asked for insurance papers was the best thing that ever happened to me. Because it finally opened my eyes."
Ricardo swallowed hard, his voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Can we... can we start over? Just the two of us? No family, just us?"
Valeria let out a soft, genuine smile—the first real smile of freedom in years.

"There is no 'us,' Ricardo. Papers have already been filed for an immediate, uncontested divorce with zero spousal support. By the end of today, my last name will be entirely my own again."
She turned her back on him, walking down the sunlit corridor alongside Marcus toward a future that belonged entirely to her.
