Chapter 10 - The Unseen ThroneSix months later, the Chicago skyline glittered beneath a brilliant autumn sunset.

The newly renovated Lakeshore Crown Medical Center—now officially renamed the Bennett-Mercer Trauma Institute—stood as one of the most advanced emergency medical facilities in the country. Gone were the days of overworked nurses, biased supervisors, and neglected talent. Under Nora’s uncompromising leadership, the hospital had become a sanctuary where every life mattered, regardless of status or background.

On the top-floor executive balcony overlooking Lake Michigan, the air was crisp and clear.

Nora stood leaning against the polished stone railing, wearing a tailored white lab coat over her navy scrubs, sipping a cup of black coffee as she watched the city lights flicker to life below.

Footsteps crunched softly behind her on the patio tiles.

A heavy, familiar wool coat draped over her shoulders, carrying the faint, comforting scent of cedar, rain, and clean cotton.

Vincent stepped up beside her, leaning his forearms against the railing. The dark hair at his temples was flecked with silver, and the harsh lines of his past seemed softer beneath the evening light.

“You’re working late again, Director Bennett,” Vincent murmured, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth.

Nora smiled, leaning back slightly against his shoulder without a trace of hesitation. “The ER just admitted a complicated trauma case from the south side. I wanted to review the triage notes before I head out.”

“Caleb has the security perimeter locked down tighter than a federal vault,” Vincent noted, turning his head slightly to look at her. “You don't have to carry the weight of the entire city on your shoulders anymore, Nora.”

“I know,” she replied softly, turning her face toward his. “I have help now.”

Vincent reached out, his warm, bare hand gently sliding over hers where it rested on the stone railing. There was no hesitation, no shadow of the past, and no fear left in his eyes—only the absolute, unshakeable devotion of a man who had reclaimed his soul from the fire.

Down below, the city of Chicago hummed with its endless cycle of power, crime, and ambition. But inside this tower, looking out over the starlit lake, the most feared man in America and the nurse who refused to let him die stood side by side, untouchable by anything the world could throw their way.
