Chapter 1 - THE PRICE OF HONESTY

"You don’t walk away from the Rossi family with empty hands—or clean ones."

Damian’s piercing gray eyes remained locked on Clara as he slowly reached down and picked up the signet ring. He held it up to the warm firelight, examining the microscopic cryptographic etchings hidden along the inner band. Intact. Uncompromised. The $200 million offshore trust—and the future of the Rossi syndicate—was safe.

He looked back at the terrified young woman standing before him. Clara’s breath was hitching in her chest, her fingers clutching her faded wool coat as if it were armor against the predator standing five feet away.

"You brought back an object worth more than your entire life," Damian said, his voice smooth, cold, and entirely devoid of warmth. "Why didn't you try to run? With the right buyer, that ring could have bought you an island."

"Because I'm an archivist, Mr. Rossi, not a thief," Clara said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to hold her ground. "And Patterson made it very clear that keeping it was a death sentence. I came to return what’s yours. That’s all. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’d like to leave."

She turned toward the heavy mahogany doors, but before her hand could touch the brass handle, two massive guards stepped into her path, blocking the exit.

"Did I say you could leave, Miss Jennings?" Damian’s baritone echoed through the vast study.

Clara froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. She slowly turned back to face him. "What do you want from me?"

Damian picked up a glass of dark amber whiskey from his desk, taking a slow sip. "In my world, nothing is free, and no one acts out of pure kindness. You stepped into a war zone the moment your fingers touched that platinum in the alley. The Falcones know the ring went missing. Their spies are everywhere, including Patterson’s shop."

He walked toward her, his custom Italian leather shoes making no sound against the Persian rug. He stopped mere inches away, towering over her. The faint scent of expensive cologne, cedarwood, and tobacco wrapped around her senses.

"Patterson called my men the second you walked out of his shop," Damian murmured, leaning down slightly. "Do you know who else he called? Marco Falcone’s lieutenants. By now, the Falcones know a brown-haired woman in a beat-up Honda took the ring. If you step outside those gates, Clara, you won't survive the night."

Clara’s face went completely pale. "No... no, I have nothing to do with this! I gave it back!"

"They won't care," Damian replied coldly. "They will assume I rewarded you. They will kidnap you, torture you for information you don't have, and discard your body in the river."

Panic surged through Clara. The weight of her mother’s unpaid medical bills, her exhausting double shifts, and now a mob target on her back collapsed on her all at once. "Then let me go to the police!"

Damian chuckled—a dark, humorless sound. "The police in Chicago answer to me or the Falcones. They cannot protect you." He gestured toward his underboss, Dominic, who stood silently in the corner. "Prepare the guest suite on the east wing. Miss Jennings will be staying with us indefinitely."

May you like

"Indefinitely?!" Clara gasped. "I have a job! I have bills!"

"Your life as an archivist in Logan Square is over," Damian said, turning his back on her as he slid the heavy signet ring onto his right pinky finger. "From this moment on, you exist only within these walls. Consider it protective custody... or a golden cage. The choice is yours."
