Chapter 6 - THE SNAKE WITHIN

"The deepest wounds are caused by the hands you trusted to hold your back."

Clara’s heart nearly stopped. She leaned close to Damian, her voice barely a whisper. "Damian... don't react. Look at Marco's coat pocket."

"What is it?" Damian asked, his gaze remaining stoic.

"Dominic just passed him a note," Clara whispered frantically. "I saw it. Dominic is the mole."

Damian’s jaw clenched tightly, a muscle ticking beneath his skin, but his face remained completely unreadable. "Are you certain?"

"I know what I saw, Damian! He used a subtle hand slide—a thief’s technique!"

Damian didn't hesitate. He gently grabbed Clara’s hand, kissing her knuckles publicly to maintain the illusion. "Good eyes, little archivist. Now, we execute Phase Two."

Damian signaled his personal security detail. Within minutes, the perimeter was quietly locked down under the guise of an VIP security protocol.

Damian pulled Dominic into a private VIP lounge off the main ballroom. Clara remained by the door, shielded by armed guards.

"Dominic," Damian said, walking over to the bar and pouring two glasses of scotch. "We’ve worked together for twelve years. My father trusted you."

"He did, boss," Dominic said, though a subtle drop of sweat trickled down his neck. "And I've bled for this family."

"Then explain why Marco Falcone knows every movement of my private transport," Damian said softly, setting the glass down. "Explain why he knew Clara was at the estate."

Dominic’s eyes widened in panic. He reached for his inner jacket pocket, but Damian was faster.

In one fluid, terrifying movement, Damian pulled his suppressed pistol and fired.

Pfft.

Dominic gasped, dropping to his knees as a bullet lodged into his shoulder.

"You betrayed my father five years ago on the steps of the cathedral, didn't you?" Damian asked, his voice dripping with terrifying calm as he walked over and placed the hot barrel of the gun against Dominic’s forehead. "You tipped off the Falcones. You caused his death."

"Damian... please..." Dominic choked out, bleeding onto the plush carpet. "Falcone threatened my family! I had no choice!"

"You always have a choice," Damian growled. "You chose wrong."
