Chapter 4 - THE FAKE ENGAGEMENT

"To hunt a snake, you must become the bait."

The attack on the Rossi estate sent shockwaves through Chicago's underworld. Damian moved his core operations to a secluded, heavily fortified penthouse apartment overlooking Lake Michigan.

The war between the Rossi and Falcone families was now fully ignited. But Damian faced a strategic problem: the Falcone family was allied with the corrupt city council, making a direct military strike risky without sparking federal intervention.

In the quiet lounge of the penthouse, Damian presented Clara with an unbelievable proposal.

"You want me to what?" Clara gasped, staring at the diamond ring resting on the glass coffee table next to a thick stack of legal documents.

"An engagement," Damian stated plainly, sipping his espresso. "The underworld views you as my weakness—a helpless civilian girl who found my ring. As long as you are viewed as a liability, they will keep targeting you."

"And making me your fiancée fixes that?!" Clara argued. "That puts a massive target right on my forehead!"

"No," Damian corrected smoothly. "It changes the rules of engagement. In our world, an attack on a boss's intended bride requires an immediate, total retaliation from all allied syndicates. Furthermore, hosting a formal engagement gala forces Marco Falcone to appear in public under a truce."

He leaned forward, his gray eyes locking onto hers with intense focus. "At the gala, Marco will attempt to make a move. He will expose his mole within my organization. When he does, I will eliminate him, secure my empire, and end this war."

"And what do I get out of this suicidal play?" Clara asked, her heart racing.

Damian pushed a folder across the table. Clara opened it. Inside were receipts paid in full for all her mother's crushing medical debts, along with a deed to a historic antique archive in downtown Chicago, fully funded in her name.

"Your mother's debt is gone," Damian said softly. "And your dream is handed to you on a silver platter. All you have to do is play the part of the woman who thawed the heart of the Ice Boss for one week."

Clara stared at the documents. Freedom. Financial security for the rest of her life.

She looked up at Damian, noticing the tense posture of his shoulders, the exhaustion behind his sharp eyes. Despite his coldness, he had kept her safe. He was a monster, yes—but he was her monster.

"One week," Clara said firmly. "And no real physical contact."

Damian let out a low, dangerous smirk. "Deal, Miss Jennings."
