Chapter 3 - THE HOUR OF THE WOLF

The boardroom erupted into absolute madness. Board members were shouting, shouting into their phones, demanding answers from their PR teams.
But Ivy Lancaster didn't panic for long. She smoothed her green jacket, her eyes flashing with a cold, venomous light. She walked up to Andrew, ignoring the chaos around them, and whispered so only he could hear.
"You think you've won because you found a bastard child and a brain-dead ex-lover?" she hissed. "You're playing checkers, Andrew. I'm playing chess. Do you really think your precious Mary is safe just because you called your little security team?"
Andrew’s heart skipped a beat. "What did you do?"
"Check your phone," she whispered.
Andrew pulled out his device. A live video feed was playing from an unknown number. It showed the interior of a moving ambulance. On the stretcher was Mary. But the paramedic sitting next to her wasn't wearing a Chicago Memorial uniform. He was wearing a tactical vest.
And in his hand, he held a syringe filled with a clear liquid.
"One press of a button," Ivy whispered in his ear, "and the potassium chloride in that syringe enters her IV line. It will look like a sudden, tragic cardiac arrest brought on by her head trauma. The perfect medical mishap."
Andrew’s breath hitched. He felt a cold sweat break out on the back of his neck. For all his billions, for all his power, he was completely helpless in this split second.
"What do you want?" Andrew asked, his voice shaking.
"I want Hale Meridian," Ivy said, her voice a poisonous purr. "I want you to sign over your remaining thirty percent stake to IL Holdings. Now. Right here, in front of the board. You sign, the ambulance arrives safely at Northwestern, and Mary lives. You don't... and Lauren becomes an orphan tonight."
The board members were watching them, sensing the life-or-death negotiation happening in whispers.
Andrew looked at the document Ivy’s assistant placed on the table. It was a transfer of ownership form. Signing it would strip him of everything he had spent his entire adult life building. He would go from a billionaire to a man with nothing but the clothes on his back.
He looked at the live feed of Mary on his phone.
Then he thought of Lauren. “My mommy said as long as I keep the Bible with me, God stays right here.”
Andrew picked up the heavy Montblanc pen.
"Andrew, don't!" shouted one of his loyal board members, Arthur. "If you sign that, she takes complete control of the firm! You can't trust her!"
"I don't have a choice, Arthur," Andrew said quietly.
He lowered the pen to the paper.
"Sign it, Andrew," Ivy urged, her face twisted in a mask of triumphant greed. "Sign your empire away."
Andrew pressed the pen to the paper. He wrote his first name: Andrew.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the boardroom shattered inward with a deafening crash.
"Federal Agents! Nobody move!"
A dozen tactical officers in FBI vests flooded the room, their weapons raised. Leading them was a tall, stern-looking woman with her badge held high.
"Ivy Lancaster," the agent announced. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder."
Ivy’s eyes went wide. She took a step back toward the floor-to-ceiling windows. "This is absurd! On what evidence?"
The FBI agent smiled coldly. "We just intercepted an ambulance registered to a shell company owned by IL Holdings. Inside, we found a kidnapped comatose patient, Mary Grace Fitzgerald, and a mercenary hired to administer a lethal dose of potassium. He’s already talking, Ms. Lancaster. He gave us your name, your bank transfer records, and the digital encryption key to your private server."
Andrew let out a breath he felt he had been holding for five years. He dropped the Montblanc pen, leaving his signature incomplete.
He walked up to Ivy, who was now being slammed against the mahogany table, her hands forced behind her back into silver handcuffs.
"You forgot one thing, Ivy," Andrew said, his voice dripping with utter contempt. "I built the security protocols for Hale Meridian. I knew you were monitoring my phone. The live feed you sent me? My security chief, Marcus, intercepted the signal ten minutes ago, traced the GPS of the ambulance, and handed the coordinates directly to the FBI."
Ivy spat at his feet, her face distorted with rage. "You'll never get her back, Andrew! She’s brain-dead! You're going to spend the rest of your life taking care of a vegetable and a brat!"
"Get her out of my sight," Andrew said.
As the agents dragged Ivy away, screaming curses into the hallway, Andrew turned his back on the boardroom. He didn't look at the board members who were now begging him to stay, begging him to lead the company through the crisis.

He didn't care about Hale Meridian Capital anymore.
He walked out, heading straight for the elevators. He had a daughter to find, and a woman to save.
