Chapter 4 - THE MIRACLE AT NORTHWESTERN

Six hours later, Andrew sat in the private ICU waiting room of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

The atmosphere here was different. It was quiet, luxurious, and staffed by the finest medical minds in the country. Dr. Robert Chen, the world-renowned neurosurgeon Andrew had hired, emerged from the double doors, pulling off his surgical mask.

Andrew stood up immediately. Lauren, who had been sleeping soundly on the leather sofa wrapped in a warm cashmere blanket, stirred but didn't wake.

"Dr. Chen," Andrew said, his voice tight with anxiety. "Tell me."

Dr. Chen offered a tired but reassuring smile. "The swelling on her brain was severe, Mr. Hale. The previous hospital was... let’s just say their treatment plan was highly questionable. It’s a miracle you got her out of there when you did. We performed an emergency craniotomy to relieve the pressure. The surgery was a complete success."

Andrew felt a wave of relief so intense it made him dizzy. "Is she going to wake up?"

"She is already showing signs of coming out of the coma," Dr. Chen said. "Her vitals are strong. She is breathing on her own now. You can go in and see her. But only one of you at a time."

Andrew walked over to the sofa and gently shook Lauren’s shoulder. "Lauren. Wake up, sweetheart."

The little girl opened her dark, serious eyes. She rubbed them with her tiny fists. "Is Mommy okay?"

"She’s awake," Andrew said, a genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time in years. "She wants to see you."

Lauren scrambled off the sofa, her face lighting up with pure, childlike joy. "Can we go now?"

"Yes," Andrew said.

He led her down the hallway to Room 12. Through the glass, he saw Mary. She was no longer attached to the terrifying ventilator. Her eyes were open, looking tired but clear, gazing out at the city lights of Chicago.

Andrew pushed the door open.

Mary turned her head slowly. When her eyes fell on Lauren, a tear slipped down her pale cheek. "Lauren... my baby..."

"Mommy!" Lauren cried, running to the side of the bed. Andrew lifted her up so she could hug her mother without disturbing the IV lines. Mary held her daughter tightly, sobbing softly into her tangled hair.

Then, Mary looked up. Her eyes met Andrew’s.

The silence between them was filled with five years of unspoken pain, regret, and lost time.

"Andrew," she whispered, her voice cracking. "You found her."

"I found her," Andrew said, walking closer to the bed. He reached out, his hand trembling, and touched her face. "Mary... I am so sorry. I was a fool. I let them make me believe you betrayed me. I let them take you away from me."

"Ivy threatened to kill Lauren," Mary whispered, her eyes wide with the memory of that terror. "I had to run, Andrew. I had to hide her. I didn't want you to lose everything because of me."

"I lost everything the day you left," Andrew said, his voice breaking. "Hale Meridian is nothing. The billions are nothing. This... you two... this is the only thing that matters."

Lauren reached into her small fabric bag, which she had insisted on carrying with her. She pulled out the small, frayed blue Bible and placed it gently on Mary’s chest.

"See, Mommy?" Lauren said proudly. "I kept it safe. Just like you said. And God brought Daddy to us."

Mary looked at Andrew, her eyes shining with tears. "Daddy?"

Andrew looked down at his daughter. He knelt beside the bed, taking Mary’s hand in his left, and Lauren’s hand in his right.

"Yes," Andrew said, his voice firm and filled with a new, unbreakable resolve. "Daddy. And I am never, ever letting you go again."

But just as the warmth of the reunion filled the room, the monitor next to Mary's bed began to beep rapidly. Her heart rate was spiking.

"Andrew..." Mary gasped, her hand suddenly gripping his with terrifying strength. "There's... there's something else. Ivy... she wasn't working alone."
