Chapter 15 - Trapped in the BasementMy mind raced, trying to process the sheer scale of the betrayal. The woman I mourned, the woman I married, the best friend I trusted with my life—they were all part of an elaborate syndicate designed to strip me of everything I owned.

"And you?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm as my hand slipped behind my back, searching the workbench for anything heavy. "Are you going to kill me too, Marcus?"

"I don't want to kill you, Graham," Marcus sighed, raising the iron poker slightly. "You're my friend. But you found the ledger. You found the tape. If you take that evidence to the police, my life is over. So, here's what's going to happen: we’re going to stage a tragic accident. A gas leak in the basement. You tried to save your house, but unfortunately, you didn't make it out."

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, I grabbed a heavy cast-iron wrench from the workbench and hurled it straight at his head.

Marcus ducked instinctively. The wrench grazed his shoulder, crashing into the fuse box behind him with a loud shower of blue sparks.

The basement plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

"You idiot!" Marcus roared in the dark, the sound of his heavy boots lunging forward across the concrete floor.

I didn't wait. I ducked low, scrambled past the workbench, and sprinted blindly toward the basement stairs, feeling my way along the cold stone wall.
