On a sun-drenched Saturday morning, I stood near the edge of the park’s walking path, watching a little girl with dark, tangled curls laugh hysterically as she chased a flock of pigeons across the grass, wearing a brand-new pink jacket that didn't have a single tear in it.

I slipped the phone away, looking up just as Lucy came running back toward me, holding a bright yellow dandelion she had plucked from the grass.
