Chapter 14 - The Strike at MidnightIn a fraction of a second, my hand stopped moving across the paper. Instead of signing, my left hand snapped upward, deploying the concealed titanium blade from my forearm sleeve.

Before Rostov’s bodyguards could even register the motion, I lunged across the table, grabbing Rostov by his silk tie and driving the blade straight through the wooden armrest of his booth, pinning his hand to the furniture.
Rostov shrieked in agonizing shock, his scotch glass shattering on the floor.
"Now, Marcus!" I roared.
The heavy steel side doors of the Obsidian Club blasted open with a deafening crash. Marcus and a twelve-man tactical assault team, clad in black Kevlar and armed with suppressed carbines, swarmed the room like a localized hurricane.
Flash-bang grenades detonated near the ceiling, filling the lounge with blinding white light and a deafening concussive pop that dropped Rostov's guards to their knees, clutching their ears.
Chaos erupted. Glass shattered, tables overturned, and shouts of pure panic echoed through the warehouse.
I ignored the gunfire, grabbing Samuel by the collar of his ruined suit jacket and hauling him out of the crossfire. "Can you run, Sam?"
"Like hell!" Samuel gasped, adrenaline overriding his fear as we ducked behind a reinforced concrete pillar.
Across the room, Marcus efficiently neutralized the remaining syndicate enforcers with non-lethal suppression rounds, pinning Rostov to the booth with his own blood pooling on the mahogany table.
I walked back over to Rostov, pressing the tip of my titanium blade against his throat. The arrogant crime lord was shaking violently, his face white with terror.
"You thought I was weak because I chose to love a child," I whispered, my voice dangerously calm. "You thought my humanity was a disease. Let this be a lesson, Viktor. A man who has nothing left to lose is dangerous; a man who has finally found something worth living for is unstoppable."

"Don't... don't kill me," Rostov choked out, tears mixing with sweat on his scarred cheek.
"I’m not going to kill you," I said, stepping back and sheathing my blade. "The FBI's organized crime division is pulling up outside right now. You're going to spend the rest of your natural life reflecting on your bad business decisions."
