Chapter 11 - The Shadow of the PastLife in the penthouse had settled into a rhythm that felt almost foreign to me. Mornings no longer smelled of sterile hospital rooms and impending doom; instead, they smelled of toasted waffles, spilled orange juice, and the sound of tiny sneakers pattering across the hardwood floors.

Lucy was healing remarkably well. The physical scar on her shoulder was fading into a thin silver line, but the emotional armor she had worn since childhood was melting away day by day. She had enrolled in a private Midtown preparatory school under her new legal name, Lucy Hale, and for the first time in her life, she had a backpack full of colorful notebooks and a lunchbox packed with notes I wrote on bright yellow sticky paper.

Yet, peace in the underworld is never absolute.

One rainy Tuesday evening, while Lucy was upstairs practicing her piano chords with her tutor, Marcus stepped into my study without knocking. His face wore a grim expression that told me trouble was brewing.

"Boss, we have a problem," Marcus said, placing a heavy manila folder on my desk. "Raymond may be locked away in federal custody, but before he took his fall, he sold off a significant chunk of our older logistics contracts to a syndicate operating out of the Brooklyn docks. And the man running that syndicate isn't a stranger."

I opened the folder. Inside was a glossy surveillance photograph of a scarred, heavy-set man with cold, dead eyes standing outside a shipping warehouse.

"Viktor Rostov," I murmured, the name tasting like ash on my tongue.

"The very same," Marcus nodded. "Rostov blames you for his brother's arrest back in twenty-twenty. With Raymond gone and rumors of your health struggles still lingering in the underworld grapevine, Rostov thinks Hale Enterprises is ripe for a hostile takeover—the kind settled with blood rather than court injunctions."

I leaned back in my leather chair, a cold, familiar fire igniting deep within my chest. For six months, I had been Vincent Hale the father, the protector, the man who walked in the sunlight. But looking at Rostov's face, I realized that the ghosts of my past were not going to let me walk away so easily.
