Chapter 10 - The Last SunsetThe sun dipped below the tree line, painting the sky in violent shades of violet and crimson—the exact color of a purple crayon drawing on a black velvet tablecloth.

The swing had stopped hours ago. The yard was quiet now, save for the crickets beginning their evening song.
Alessandro sat on the wooden porch steps, a cup of black coffee cooling beside him. Maria walked out of the screen door, carrying a woolen blanket, and draped it quietly over his broad shoulders.
"It gets cold here at night," Maria said softly, sitting down on the step beside him.
Alessandro pulled the blanket closer, looking out over the dark, peaceful lake. "It’s quiet," he murmured. "I had forgotten what quiet sounded like."
"You built an empire on noise and blood," Maria said, her voice gentle, lacking all the fear she had felt three months ago. "Did you ever think you'd end up here... pushing a swing on a hill?"
Alessandro turned his head, his dark eyes meeting hers in the twilight. A faint, knowing smile touched his lips.
"No," he said softly. "I thought men like me only had two destinations: a prison cell or a bloody grave."
He reached out, placing his warm, calloused hand over hers.
"And yet," Alessandro whispered, "a maid's little daughter walked into a room with a purple crayon, and taught me how to live."

Maria didn't pull her hand away. She simply smiled, resting her head against his shoulder as the first stars began to pierce the velvet night sky above them.
