Chapter 5 - The Ledger of BloodThe room went dead silent. The housekeepers in the foyer lowered their heads even further, pretending they hadn't heard a word.

Alessandro didn't flinch. He didn't deny it. He simply tilted his head, studying her the way an artist studies a painting that’s missing a final brushstroke.
"Elena Alvarez," Alessandro said, pronouncing the name like a prayer he hadn't spoken aloud in years. "She worked in my kitchen for six months. A good woman. Quiet. Honest. And then one night, she intercepted a package meant for my uncle—a package containing poison meant to wipe out half my council."
Maria flinched as if she’d been struck. "She didn't know! She thought it was just medicine!"
"She knew enough to get herself killed," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a register so low it was almost painful to hear. "The men who sent her—Bianchi’s dogs—thought they could silence her before she talked. I found her in that alley behind the hospital. I couldn't save her life, Maria. But I made sure the men who put her there paid with theirs."
Tears finally spilled over Maria’s lashes, tracking hot paths down her cheeks. "And me? Why did you keep me around? Why let me work in your house?"
"Because," Alessandro replied, stepping so close she could smell the faint scent of sandalwood and cigar smoke on his collar, "when I looked at your personnel file three years ago, I saw her eyes in yours. I wanted to see if the bloodline of the Alvarez family knew how to betray me, too."
"I never betrayed you!" Maria cried out, her voice cracking. "I just wanted to raise my niece in peace! I didn't want anything to do with your wars!"
"And yet," Alessandro pointed out, looking past her toward Sophia, who was happily rolling the wooden car across the expensive carpet, "here you are. In my house. On a day I cleared for a three-year-old child."
Before Maria could answer, Marco’s phone buzzed sharply in his hand. He glanced at the illuminated screen, and his face turned the color of ash.
"Boss," Marco said, his voice laced with sudden panic. "We’ve got a breach at the Astoria laundromat. Bianchi’s hit squad just kicked the door down. They're tearing the apartment apart."
Alessandro’s eyes flashed with a terrifying, arctic light. The dark, dormant beast beneath the surface of the Italian mafia boss uncoiled.
"They went after her home," Alessandro whispered.
"They're looking for the ledger," Marco said rapidly. "The ledger with the port authorities' names. They think Elena hid it with her family before she died."
Alessandro turned around slowly. He looked down at Sophia, who was currently looking up at him with a wide, innocent smile, holding up the wooden car.
"Signore?" Sophia asked, her sweet voice breaking through the heavy, suffocating tension of the room. "Can we play hide-and-seek now?"

Alessandro knelt down on one knee, right in front of the little girl. He gently touched her cheek with his calloused thumb.
"Not yet, little one," Alessandro murmured, his voice thick with a promise written in blood and iron. "First, I have to go clean out the trash."
