CHAPTER 2 – The Dog Who Remembered Everything

Time seemed to freeze.
The knife flashed through the darkness.
Noah screamed.
But Rex exploded forward before the blade could reach the child.
The impact threw the attacker backward into a puddle.
The hooded man cursed as the German Shepherd stood over Noah, teeth exposed, every muscle tense.
Yet something strange happened.
Rex didn't attack.
He stared.
Not with hatred...
But recognition.
The attacker slowly looked into the dog's eyes.
His confidence vanished.
"No..."
he whispered.
"It can't be you."
For the first time, fear replaced cruelty.
Rex stepped forward.
One step.
Then another.
His growl became lower, almost... personal.
The man's hand began shaking.
Years earlier, he had worked as a security contractor at a classified military facility.
There had been one dog...
One impossible dog...
A German Shepherd trained not only to protect—but to remember faces forever.
The same dog he believed had died during a mission after witnessing a crime no one was supposed to survive.
Yet here Rex was.
Alive.
Watching him.
Recognizing him.
The attacker stumbled backward.
"No one will believe a dog..."
he muttered.
Then he lunged toward Noah again.
But before he reached the boy...
Rex did something no one expected.
Instead of biting...
He ripped a small leather pouch from the man's jacket and dropped it at Noah's feet.
Inside was an old photograph.
The picture showed Noah's father...
Standing beside the same German Shepherd.
On the back, written in faded ink, were eight chilling words:
"If anything happens to me... trust Rex, not people."
Noah's hands trembled.
Because at that exact moment...
Police sirens echoed through the alley.
And the hooded man smiled.
"You think this is over?"
He slowly raised both hands to surrender...
May you like
Then whispered one sentence that turned Noah's blood cold.
"The people who killed your father are already watching you."
