Chapter 7 - The UnravellingChloe stopped dead in her tracks. The glass of champagne in her hand slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble tile with a sharp crack that echoed through the silent room.

“Mom?” Chloe whispered, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at Eleanor in handcuffs. “What’s happening? What did you do?”
“Stay back, Chloe!” Eleanor cried out, tears finally breaking through her makeup, streaking black mascara down her cheeks. “Don’t let them touch you! They’re ruining everything!”
Chloe looked around the room, seeing the society board members whispering behind their hands, the police officers, and finally, her eyes locked onto me. There was no sweetness left in her face, no practiced corporate polish. Just raw, cornered panic.
“Ethan,” she breathed, taking a tentative step forward, her hand reaching out. “Tell me this is a joke. Tell me your mother’s friends are just... it’s a misunderstanding.”
“Your parents bought my stolen child, Chloe,” I said. My voice was completely flat, devoid of anger now, reduced to ash. “And you knew about it. You knew my mother paid Samantha off, you knew my son was handed over to your family under a forged death certificate, and you sat across the dinner table from me every night pretending to love me.”
“I didn't know all of it!” Chloe protested, her voice rising into a shrill defense. “Your mother just said there was a settlement, that the baby didn’t make it! I didn't know they were raising him! I swear to God, Ethan—”
“Stop lying,” Samantha interrupted. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the ballroom like a razor.
Samantha stepped out from behind the police officers, closing the distance between herself and Chloe until they were standing inches apart. Samantha was half a head shorter than Chloe, but she looked ten feet tall.
“I have the text messages, Chloe,” Samantha said smoothly. “Downloaded from your cloud backup during the subpoena of the Sterling household assets this morning. Messages between you and your mother from three weeks ago: ‘Make sure Ethan doesn't look into the Evanston hospital records. If he finds out Leo is my son, the wedding is off and the trust fund goes up in smoke.’”
Chloe’s face went entirely grey. The name hung in the air like a thunderclap.
Leo.
“My son’s name is Leo,” I repeated, the name tasting sacred and terrifying on my tongue.
“Our son,” Samantha corrected gently, not breaking eye contact with Chloe. “His name is Leo. And he’s waiting in a state protective custody home five miles from here, where a judge has already signed an emergency reunification order.”

Eleanor screamed, lunging forward, but Detective Miller held her back, guiding her toward the exit.
Chloe stood alone in the center of the ballroom, surrounded by hundreds of Chicago’s elite, utterly abandoned by the empire her parents had built on lies.
