Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Betrayal and the Final ChoiceSenator Vance raised a hand to calm the terrified crowd, his voice maintaining its practiced, authoritative resonance even as his eyes darted toward the exits.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please remain calm," Vance announced smoothly, stepping down from the dais. "We are experiencing a minor security breach. Security will escort you out."
"Don't bother running, Julian," Conrad said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom as he drew his Sig Sauer and aimed it squarely at the Senator's chest. "The firewall is down. The flash drive is already uploading every single transaction, murder contract, and money-laundering scheme to every major news outlet and federal agency in the country."
Julian Vance’s polished veneer finally cracked. A dark, venomous sneer twisted his features. He reached slowly inside his jacket, not for a weapon, but pulling out a small satellite detonator.
"You arrogant bastard, Ashford," Julian hissed, pressing a button on the device. "You think I didn't plan for a contingency? The entire cliffside is wired with high explosives. If I go down, this entire estate—and everyone in it—goes into the ocean."
Elena stepped out from the shadows, her face a mask of cold, unyielding fury. She raised her Glock, pointing it directly at her uncle's heart.
"Do it, Uncle Julian," Elena said, her voice completely steady for the first time in three months. "Press the button. Let the whole world watch you burn with us."
Before Julian could thumb the secondary trigger, the grand mahogany doors at the entrance of the ballroom burst open.
Marcus stumbled inside, bleeding heavily from his shoulder where Brutus had bitten him earlier, followed closely by a swarm of federal cyber-crimes agents with weapons drawn and badges held high.
"It's over, Julian," Marcus panted, leaning against a marble pillar, looking directly at the Senator. "The servers at Foundation headquarters were seized five minutes ago. You're finished."
Julian stared at his nephew in utter disbelief, his finger trembling over the detonator. "You... you betrayed me?"
"Family loyalty, Uncle," Marcus said bitterly, looking across the room at his sister. "Turns out I backed the wrong horse."
Julian’s face twisted in rage as he slammed his thumb down hard on the detonator—
Click.
Nothing happened.
From behind the shattered windows, a heavy tactical drone whirred down, its laser-guided cutter having sliced through the main explosive relay wires seconds before impact.
Conrad stepped forward, holstering his gun with chilling calm, and delivered a devastating right hook that sent Senator Julian Vance crashing unconscious onto the marble floor.
The storm outside finally broke, the heavy rain giving way to the first golden rays of dawn breaking over the Pacific horizon.
Elena lowered her weapon, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the weight of three months of terror finally lifted from her shoulders. She looked at Conrad, who stood beside her against the rising sun, the ultimate predator who had chosen to let her in from the storm.
May you like
"Well," Conrad said, a rare, faint smirk touching the corner of his mouth as federal sirens wailed in the distance. "Looks like you survived the night, Elena."
She looked back at him, a ghost of a smile returning to her lips. "I told you, Mr. Ashford... I'm a hard person to kill."
