Chapter 8 - The Family SyndicateThe ATV roared through the torrential downpour, cutting recklessly through the muddy logging trails of the Ashford estate. Conrad drove with one hand, his eyes locked on the dark treeline, while Elena clung to the passenger grab bar, her mind reeling from the catastrophic betrayal.

Her uncle. The beloved, philanthropic politician who regularly appeared on national television talking about family values and government reform. He was the apex predator at the head of the Nero Foundation.
"He used us," Elena said over the roar of the engine and wind. "Richard found out that Julian was funneling state-budget subsidies into the Syndicate's offshore accounts. That's why they killed him. It wasn't just corporate espionage—it was treason at the highest level!"
"And Julian knew you had the flash drive," Conrad shouted back, shifting gears as they bounced over a washed-out timber bridge. "He couldn't risk a federal investigation before his presidential bid next year. That's why he sent your brother and a black-ops squad to wipe you out."
"Where are we going?"
"Julian's private estate on the coastal cliffs at Blackwood Bay," Conrad said, his jaw set in a hard line. "He's hosting a high-roller fundraiser tonight for his campaign. Every major player in the Syndicate will be under one roof. We're crashing the party."
Forty minutes later, the ATV cut its engine, coasting silently into a dense stand of pine trees overlooking a sprawling, glass-and-steel modern mansion perched precariously on a jagged cliff edge. The estate blazed with brilliant white lights, classical music drifting faintly across the stormy sea air from the grand ballroom inside.

Blackwood Bay was crawling with private security, but Conrad knew every blind spot on this coast.
"Put this on," Conrad handed her a dark tactical cloak with a hood, pulling his own black wool cap down over his forehead. "We go in through the lower service docks. Stay behind me, and whatever you do—don't hesitate."
