Chapter 7 - The Underground EscapeInside the reinforced steel vault, emergency red lighting flickered to life, casting long, bloody shadows across racks of assault rifles, tactical gear, and monitors displaying the exterior cameras.

The security feeds showed the western wing of Ashford Manor engulfed in roaring flames. Firefighters would never make it out this far into the mountains, and even if they did, the Nero Foundation had local emergency services jammed.

Elena leaned against a metal ammunition crate, breathing heavily, clutching her bandaged shoulder. The adrenaline was fading again, leaving behind a profound, hollow shock. "My brother... my own brother..." she muttered repeatedly, her eyes vacant.

Conrad didn't offer empty comfort. He was pulling a heavy tactical vest over his black turtleneck, slapping a fresh drum magazine into an MP5 submachine gun.

"Family loyalties mean nothing in our world, Elena," Conrad said flatly, tossing her a compact Glock and an extra magazine. "Only survival matters now. Are you with me, or are you going to sit here and wait for them to cut through this steel?"

She looked down at the gun in her hands, then up at Conrad's cold, resolute face. Something shifted inside her. The frightened runaway vanished, replaced by the hardened survivor who had endured three months on the knife's edge.

She racked the slide of the Glock with a sharp, metallic snap. "Lead the way, Mr. Ashford."

Conrad pressed a panel on the wall, opening a secondary bulkhead that led down a steep, concrete-lined subterranean tunnel. "This leads to the ravine half a mile down the mountain. There's an all-terrain vehicle waiting at the end. We're going to pay a visit to the man who signed my death warrant tonight."

"Who?" Elena asked, following closely behind him into the damp, echoing dark.

"The Chairman of the Nero Foundation," Conrad replied, his eyes gleaming in the red emergency light. "Your husband's former boss. A man named Senator Julian Vance."

Elena stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat.

"Senator Vance..." she whispered, her voice trembling with absolute disbelief. "He's... he's Marcus and my uncle. He raised us after our parents died."
