Chapter 10 - The Final BalanceSix months later.

The morning sun over downtown Chicago was bright, warm, and uninterrupted by storms.

Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor of the newly rebranded Cross-Miller Tower, the mahogany table was clear of clutter. No shadow accounts. No hidden ledgers. No syndicate fronts.

Audrey Miller—now wearing a crisp, tailored charcoal suit without a sling or a bandage in sight—stood at the head of the table, clicking through a digital presentation on the wall monitor. Her left hand rested casually on the polished wood, a simple, elegant platinum band catching the morning light on her ring finger.

Seated around the table were the senior partners, the regional directors, and Silas, who offered a polite, approving nod as the final quarterly numbers blinked green across the screen.

“Net operating revenue is up thirty-four percent,” Audrey announced, her voice confident, clear, and commanding the complete attention of the room. “All legacy assets have been fully audited, legalized, and integrated into our primary portfolio. Cross-Miller Holdings is officially 100% clean.”

A murmur of approval rippled through the room.

“Thank you, everyone. Meeting adjourned,” Audrey said.

As the executives filed out of the boardroom, whispering among themselves, the heavy oak doors clicked shut, leaving Audrey alone in the quiet, sunlit space.

Except she wasn't entirely alone.

From the private office connected to the boardroom, Adrian stepped out. He was dressed in a sharp dark suit, his coat slung casually over one shoulder, watching her with that familiar, intense gaze that always made her pulse skip a beat.

He walked over, stopping just behind her chair, sliding his arms around her waist and pulling her gently back against his chest.

“Thirty-four percent increase,” Adrian murmured against her hair, his breath warm. “You’re ruining my reputation as a ruthless underworld kingpin, Mrs. Cross. People are going to start thinking we’re a respectable corporation.”

Audrey leaned back, resting her head against his shoulder, a soft smile touching her lips.

“That was the plan, Mr. Cross,” she whispered, turning her head to look up at him. “After all... the books are finally balanced.”

Adrian didn't answer with words. He simply lowered his head, pressing his lips to hers in a slow, deep kiss that wiped away every ghost of the past five years.

Outside, the Chicago traffic hummed far below, unaware and uncaring of the empire built in the shadows. But inside the glass tower, standing together in the morning light, they had finally closed the books on the old world—and opened the first clean page of everything that came next.
