Chapter 3 - Blood on the MarbleThe gunshot was muffled, sounding like a heavy book dropping onto a carpeted floor.

But in a house tuned to the frequency of violence, silence was louder than noise.

Julian was pouring a glass of scotch in his study when the subtle vibration of the estate’s internal security grid shifted. Zone 4—Guest Quarters East.

His glass hit the mahogany desk, amber liquid splashing across the wood.

Julian didn't reach for his phone or call his guards. He drew the customized Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster, thumbed off the safety, and moved out of the room with the lethal efficiency of a ghost.

Down the grand hallway, past the velvet-draped portraits of his ancestors, Julian closed the distance to the guest wing in seconds.

The door to Marcus's room was cracked open.

Julian kicked it wide, his gun raised, ready to unleash hell.

What he saw stopped him cold.

Marcus was pressed hard against the balcony glass, breathing heavily, wide-eyed with terror. Directly in front of him stood Vance, his arm raised, a silenced pistol pointed straight at the boy's chest.

For a fraction of a second, the world stood still.

"Vance," Julian said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the absolute weight of an executioner.

Vance slowly lowered the barrel of his gun and turned his head. There was no panic on his face, only a cold, tired resignation.

"You're late, Julian," Vance said smoothly. "The boy is a liability. He brought the opposition right to our doorstep. If we don't eliminate him, the entire Syndicate falls within forty-eight hours."

"Is that why you're holding the gun?" Julian stepped into the room, his eyes narrowing to razor slits. "Or is it because the ledger contains the records of every offshore account you've been draining behind my back for the last three years?"

Vance’s lips curved into a thin, bitter smile. "You always were too smart for your own good, boss. Power makes you paranoid, but in my case... paranoia wasn't enough. You built an empire on blood, Julian. But empires crumble when the king gets soft. I didn't betray you. I just decided to take over the throne before someone else did."

"Where is Leo?" Julian demanded, taking another step forward.

"Dead," Vance said casually. "Found him in an alley two weeks ago. He thought he could blackmail me with the core data. Turns out, little brother Marcus here got his hands on the backup before I could clean the apartment."

Vance’s hand flicked with terrifying speed, pivoting the gun away from Marcus and aiming it directly at Julian’s heart.

"It's been a good run, Julian," Vance whispered, tightening his finger on the trigger. "Say goodbye to your daughter for me."

Bang.
