CHAPTER 4 — "The Dead FBI Agent Who Refused to Stay Buried"

The employee badge shook in Nathan's hand.

MICHAEL ROSS

Former FBI Special Agent.

Officially deceased.

Date of death:

Twelve years ago.

Nathan looked from the badge to the two unconscious security guards sprawled across the chapel floor.

Neither had suffered serious injuries.

Every strike had been surgical.

Calculated.

The work of someone who knew exactly how much force was enough.

Detective Grant Hale arrived seconds later with two officers.

"What happened?"

Nathan handed him the badge.

Hale's face changed instantly.

"...Impossible."

"You know him?"

Hale nodded slowly.

"I was a rookie detective when Michael Ross disappeared."

"Disappeared?"

"They told the public he died during an undercover operation against an international trafficking network."

Nathan frowned.

"You don't believe that?"

Hale let out a dry laugh.

"I attended his funeral."

"And?"

"The coffin was sealed."

Twenty minutes earlier...

Michael Ross led Lily through a maze of forgotten hospital tunnels.

The passages smelled of dust, rust, and old concrete.

Pipes lined the ceiling.

Emergency lights flickered every few yards.

Lily struggled to keep up.

"Where are we going?"

"Somewhere Richard Vale can't see."

"You know him?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he stopped beside an old steel maintenance door.

From inside his jacket, he removed the tiny silver key Lily had shown him.

His weathered hands trembled.

"After all these years..."

The key fit perfectly into a nearly invisible lock hidden beneath layers of peeling paint.

Click.

The heavy door slowly opened.

Inside was a small underground room no larger than a storage closet.

Dust covered everything.

A single metal desk.

Several filing cabinets.

A wall filled with faded photographs.

And one enormous steel safe.

Lily stared.

"What is this place?"

Michael closed the door behind them.

"My confession."

Back at the hospital...

Nathan sat alone in Elena's ICU room.

She remained unconscious.

The ventilator breathed for her.

Her heart monitor beeped steadily.

He gently held her hand.

"So much time..."

His voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I thought you were gone."

A tear rolled down Elena's cheek.

Nathan froze.

"Elena?"

Her eyelids fluttered.

Slowly...

Painfully...

She opened her eyes.

For several seconds she simply looked at him.

Then she smiled.

A tiny smile.

The same one she had worn twenty years earlier on their first date.

"I always knew..."

Her voice was weak.

"...you'd become a doctor."

Nathan laughed through tears.

"And I always thought you'd become a lawyer."

"I almost did."

"What happened?"

Her smile vanished.

"My father happened."

Silence filled the room.

Nathan finally asked the question that had haunted him all night.

"Why did you disappear?"

Elena closed her eyes.

"Because they killed the wrong girl."

Nathan stared.

"What?"

"The body in the explosion..."

"...wasn't mine."

Twenty years earlier...

Richard Vale had discovered Elena planned to expose Project Genesis.

He ordered his security chief to intercept her before she could meet Nathan.

But someone made a mistake.

A different eighteen-year-old woman...

Driving the same model of car...

Wearing a similar necklace...

Was caught instead.

The explosion happened before anyone realized the error.

Richard faced two choices.

Confess.

Or erase Elena forever.

He chose the second.

The dead girl became Elena Carter.

The real Elena became a prisoner.

Hidden.

Drugged.

Moved from one private medical facility to another.

Officially...

She no longer existed.

Nathan's hands trembled.

"My God..."

"I tried to escape."

"You never contacted me."

"I did."

Nathan looked confused.

"What?"

"I wrote thirty-seven letters."

His heart stopped.

"What letters?"

"They never reached you."

Across town...

Michael Ross opened the steel safe.

Inside were dozens of thick folders.

Hard drives.

Video tapes.

Photographs.

Government documents.

Lily looked at them in confusion.

"What's all this?"

Michael carefully removed one thin file labeled:

GENESIS — SUBJECT 001

He opened it.

Inside was a newborn baby's footprint.

DNA reports.

Birth records.

Medical photographs.

Then...

A single ultrasound image.

Lily looked closer.

"That's a baby."

Michael nodded.

"Yes."

"Who?"

He swallowed.

"You."

Lily smiled innocently.

"I was little."

Michael didn't smile back.

"No."

"You were impossible."

Meanwhile...

Richard Vale landed his private helicopter atop Vale Biomedical Headquarters.

His chief of security was already waiting.

"Sir..."

"They escaped."

"I know."

"We've located Michael Ross."

Richard removed his gloves.

"And Lily?"

"Still with him."

Richard walked toward the executive elevator.

"Prepare Team Seven."

The security chief hesitated.

"Sir... Team Seven hasn't been activated since Geneva."

"I remember."

"They're... extreme."

Richard stopped walking.

"Michael Ross has spent twelve years hiding."

"Today he came out."

"Which means he believes he has enough evidence."

He looked directly at the security chief.

"I can't allow that."

Inside the hidden bunker...

Michael placed a faded photograph on the desk.

Nathan.

Elena.

A newborn baby.

Lily stared.

"That's Mommy."

"Yes."

"And that's Doctor Nathan."

"Yes."

She pointed to the tiny baby wrapped in a blue blanket.

"Who's that?"

Michael looked into her eyes.

"You."

Lily laughed.

"No."

"My mommy said I was born in Seattle."

Michael slowly slid another document toward her.

Official Birth Certificate.

Hospital Name:

Vale Research Medical Center

Mother:

Elena Vale

Father:

Nathan Brooks

Lily blinked.

"My mommy never showed me this."

"Because she couldn't."

"Why?"

Michael's face hardened.

"Because your grandfather stole you."

Back inside the ICU...

Nathan struggled to process everything.

"Lily..."

"...is really mine?"

Elena nodded weakly.

"Richard told me you were dead."

Nathan felt sick.

"He showed me your death certificate."

"I buried you."

"And I buried you."

They stared at one another.

Twenty years stolen.

By one man.

Nathan suddenly asked,

"How did you escape?"

Elena looked toward the ceiling.

"I didn't."

"What?"

"He let me."

Nathan frowned.

"Richard never lets people go."

"I wasn't released."

"I was followed."

Nathan immediately remembered the implant beneath her ribs.

"He wanted you alive."

Elena nodded.

"I became bait."

Detective Hale suddenly burst into the room.

"Nathan!"

"What?"

"We found something."

He placed a tablet on the bed.

Hospital security footage.

Time stamp:

11:46 p.m.

The video showed the ICU hallway.

Richard Vale calmly walking away.

Then...

Something unexpected.

A nurse approached him.

Richard smiled politely.

Shook her hand.

Kept walking.

Five seconds later...

The nurse collapsed.

Dead before she hit the floor.

Nathan stared.

"What happened?"

Hale zoomed in.

Richard hadn't stabbed her.

Hadn't injected her.

Hadn't touched anything except...

Her hand.

The forensic report arrived seconds later.

Cause of death:

Massive neurotoxin exposure.

Delivered through microscopic needles hidden inside Richard's signet ring.

Nathan whispered,

"He carries a murder weapon..."

"...on his finger."

Far below the city...

Michael finally opened the last folder inside the safe.

Unlike the others...

It contained only one page.

Stamped in bright red.

TOP SECRET

Lily couldn't read all the words.

But one sentence stood out.

She sounded it out slowly.

"Project..."

"...Resurrection."

Michael closed the folder immediately.

Too late.

Lily had already seen the photograph attached inside.

A man lying on an operating table.

Covered in wires.

His chest open.

Doctors surrounding him.

The date beneath the picture read:

July 18, 2006.

Lily frowned.

"Who's that?"

Michael didn't answer.

She looked closer.

Then gasped.

"It looks like Doctor Nathan."

Michael's silence confirmed it.

Lily whispered,

"But..."

"...Mommy said he was alive."

Michael slowly sat down.

For the first time in twelve years...

The legendary FBI agent looked terrified.

"He was."

Lily tilted her head.

"What do you mean?"

Michael looked directly at her.

"Richard Vale didn't fake Nathan's death."

"He caused it."

The room became silent.

Michael continued.

"For exactly..."

"...four minutes and thirty-eight seconds."

Lily didn't understand.

"What happened after that?"

Michael closed his eyes.

"Richard brought him back."

"And that's when Project Resurrection truly began."

Miles away...

Nathan suddenly collapsed to one knee inside the ICU.

An unbearable headache exploded through his skull.

Fragments of memories he had never lived flashed before his eyes.

Cold operating lights.

Voices counting backward.

Someone saying,

'Restart Subject Brooks.'

Nathan grabbed his head.

"What... is happening to me?"

The heart monitor beside Elena suddenly accelerated.

Not because of her condition.

Because she recognized the exact words Nathan whispered next.

Words he had never spoken in his life...

Yet somehow remembered.

"Subject Brooks..."

"...Phase One Complete."

Elena's face turned white.

Because only four people in the world had ever heard those words.

Three were already dead.

The fourth...

Was Richard Vale.
