CHAPTER 5 — "The Experiment That Should Never Have Woken Up"

Nathan collapsed onto one knee.
A wave of pain exploded behind his eyes.
The ICU floor seemed to tilt beneath him.
"Nathan!"
Detective Grant Hale caught him before his head struck the wall.
"What happened?"
Nathan couldn't answer.
His vision blurred.
The bright hospital lights disappeared...
...replaced by memories that couldn't possibly be his.
A cold operating room.
Metal restraints around his wrists.
Doctors wearing black surgical gowns instead of blue.
Someone adjusting a heart monitor.
A voice echoed through the room.
"Subject Brooks has been clinically dead for four minutes."
Another voice answered.
"Proceed with the Genesis Protocol."
Then—
Darkness.
Nathan gasped and opened his eyes.
He was back inside Elena's ICU room.
His shirt was soaked with sweat.
Hale stared at him.
"You blacked out."
Nathan looked at Elena.
Her face had turned ghostly pale.
"You remembered..."
she whispered.
Nathan frowned.
"Remembered what?"
Instead of answering, Elena reached for the bedside notebook.
Her fingers shook violently.
She scribbled three words.
LEVEL NINE ARCHIVES
Nathan stared at the page.
"What is that?"
"It's where..."
She struggled to breathe.
"...they kept you."
Silence swallowed the room.
Nathan laughed nervously.
"Elena..."
"I've never been in any archive."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"You don't remember because they made sure you couldn't."
Across the city...
Inside the underground bunker...
Michael Ross stood before a wall covered with photographs.
Each picture had a red string connecting it to another.
Politicians.
Judges.
Scientists.
Military officers.
Hospital directors.
And at the very center...
Richard Vale.
Lily studied the wall.
"That's a lot of people."
Michael nodded.
"They all worked for him."
"They're bad people?"
"They sold their souls."
He pointed toward dozens of missing-person posters.
"Most of these children were never kidnapped."
Lily looked confused.
"What happened?"
"They were donated."
She frowned.
"Parents don't donate children."
Michael closed his eyes.
"Some parents do."
Twenty-three years earlier...
Richard Vale announced the creation of the world's largest children's medical charity.
Free surgeries.
Free medicine.
Free research.
Thousands praised him as a hero.
What nobody knew...
The charity wasn't looking for sick children.
It was looking for perfect DNA.
Children with extraordinary immune systems.
Exceptional brain development.
Rare genetic mutations.
Every child selected became part of one classified program.
PROJECT GENESIS.
Officially...
It never existed.
Back at the hospital...
Nathan opened Elena's medical chart again.
This time he wasn't looking for injuries.
He searched every surgery she'd ever undergone.
There were seven.
No explanations.
No diagnoses.
Only dates.
Then one date froze him.
July 18, 2006.
The same date Michael had shown Lily.
Nathan whispered,
"That's impossible."
"What?"
"That's the summer after your disappearance."
Elena nodded slowly.
"They brought you to the laboratory."
Nathan looked up.
"How do you know?"
"Because..."
She began crying.
"...I watched."
Nathan felt his heartbeat stop.
"You were there?"
"They forced me to watch."
"No..."
"They wanted me to believe you died because of me."
Her voice cracked.
"They stopped your heart."
Nathan couldn't breathe.
"They declared you dead."
"They even covered your body."
She closed her eyes.
"I heard Richard tell everyone to leave."
Nathan whispered,
"Then what?"
"He walked into the room alone."
Elena had never forgotten that night.
Richard stood beside Nathan's lifeless body.
No emotion.
No regret.
Only curiosity.
He placed one hand on Nathan's chest.
Then calmly said,
"Let's see if Subject Brooks is compatible."
Scientists entered carrying silver cases.
Inside...
Hundreds of tiny transparent capsules.
Each one smaller than a grain of rice.
Richard smiled.
"Begin implantation."
Nathan staggered backward.
"What did they implant?"
Elena shook her head.
"I never knew."
"But after they finished..."
She looked directly at him.
"...your heart started beating."
Detective Hale suddenly interrupted.
"Nathan."
"What?"
"The laboratory report just came back."
He handed over another folder.
Nathan opened it.
His own annual medical examinations.
Every hospital physical.
Every blood test.
Every MRI.
Every result.
Perfect.
Too perfect.
Then one sentence highlighted in red.
Blood composition inconsistent with baseline human cellular regeneration.
Nathan looked at Hale.
"What does this mean?"
Hale swallowed.
"It means every doctor who ever examined you..."
"...lied."
Miles away...
Richard Vale entered a circular underground chamber.
It resembled a command center more than a laboratory.
Large screens covered the walls.
One by one...
Faces appeared.
Board members.
Scientists.
Government officials.
All joining through encrypted video links.
Richard spoke calmly.
"Phase One has failed."
One woman asked,
"Has Brooks remembered?"
"Partially."
Another man frowned.
"What about Subject Lily?"
Richard smiled.
"She is exactly where I wanted her."
The room became silent.
One scientist looked confused.
"You planned for Michael Ross to take her?"
"Of course."
"Why?"
Richard pressed a button.
A digital map appeared.
Red dots blinked across the city.
One dot suddenly began moving.
Richard smiled wider.
"Because Michael just led us..."
"...to the vault."
Michael suddenly stopped walking.
Something felt wrong.
He pulled a handheld signal detector from his backpack.
The screen flashed violently.
Tracking signals.
Dozens of them.
His face changed.
"No..."
Lily looked up.
"What?"
Michael immediately searched her backpack.
Nothing.
Her shoes.
Nothing.
Her teddy bear...
He froze.
Very carefully...
He sliced open one of the bear's stitched ears.
Inside...
A tiny transmitter no larger than a fingernail.
Michael closed his eyes.
"They found us."
Lily looked horrified.
"My teddy?"
"They planted it."
"When?"
Michael remembered.
The hospital.
A volunteer comforting Lily.
The bear had left her hands...
...for less than thirty seconds.
That had been enough.
At that exact moment...
More than twenty black SUVs surrounded the abandoned warehouse above them.
Doors opened.
Heavily armed men poured out.
Night-vision goggles.
Silenced rifles.
Military-grade body armor.
Team Seven.
Richard Vale's private tactical unit.
Their commander spoke into his radio.
"Target located."
Richard's voice answered calmly.
"Bring me the girl."
"And Ross?"
A short pause.
"No witnesses."
Inside the bunker...
Michael quickly gathered the files.
Hard drives.
DNA samples.
The silver key.
Everything.
Lily looked terrified.
"Are they coming?"
"Yes."
"Will they hurt us?"
Michael forced a smile.
"Not if I do my job."
He opened another hidden compartment beneath the desk.
Inside lay an old FBI badge.
A pistol.
Three spare magazines.
And a faded family photograph.
A little girl.
About Lily's age.
Michael gently touched the picture.
"My daughter."
Lily whispered,
"Where is she?"
Michael stared at the floor.
"She isn't."
Outside...
The first explosion shattered the warehouse entrance.
Concrete rained from the ceiling.
Dust filled the bunker.
Lily screamed.
Michael pulled her behind a steel support column.
"They're here."
Automatic gunfire erupted above them.
The battle had begun.
Back at the hospital...
Nathan suddenly received an anonymous text message.
No sender.
Only one photograph.
Michael Ross.
Holding Lily's hand.
Standing inside the bunker.
Nathan frowned.
"How—"
A second message arrived.
This time it contained only six words.
COME ALONE OR SHE DIES.
Before Nathan could react...
A video call automatically opened.
Richard Vale appeared on the screen.
Calm.
Perfectly dressed.
As if he were inviting Nathan to dinner.
"Hello, Nathan."
Nathan's voice turned cold.
"What do you want?"
Richard smiled.
"The truth."
"You've spent twenty years hiding it."
"I've spent twenty years protecting it."
Nathan clenched his fists.
"You murdered innocent people."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"I improved them."
Nathan stared.
Richard leaned closer to the camera.
"You still believe Project Genesis was about creating perfect children."
"It wasn't?"
Richard's smile slowly widened.
"It was about creating..."
"...the perfect adult."
Nathan felt every hair on his body stand up.
Richard continued.
"Lily was never the experiment."
The room became silent.
Nathan whispered,
"Then who was?"
Richard looked directly into the camera.
"You."
Nathan's blood froze.
Richard spoke the final words before ending the call.
"You stopped being human twenty years ago."
The screen went black.
At the exact same moment...
Nathan's smartwatch suddenly vibrated.
An alert appeared that had never existed before.
GENESIS SYSTEM ONLINE
SUBJECT BROOKS IDENTIFIED
REMOTE COMMAND RECEIVED
Nathan stared in horror as his own hand slowly began to move...
Not by his choice.
His fingers closed into a fist.
Then his arm lifted toward Detective Hale.
Nathan fought with every ounce of strength he had.
"I... can't..."
Hale stepped backward.
"Nathan?"
Nathan's voice trembled with terror.
"Run..."
His body ignored him.
His eyes filled with panic as an unfamiliar voice echoed inside his mind.
COMMAND ACCEPTED.
ELIMINATE ALL THREATS.
Nathan screamed.
Then everything went dark.
