CHAPTER 1: THE GIRL WHO WOULDN'T STOP SHAKING

It was supposed to be an ordinary evening.
The city glowed beneath rows of streetlights. Families were eating dinner. Children were getting ready for bed. Nothing seemed unusual.
Then a terrified little girl ran barefoot into the street.
Five-year-old Emily burst out of her apartment building wearing bunny pajamas, tears streaming down her face. She sprinted directly toward a passing police patrol car as if her life depended on it.
Officer Kowalev slammed the brakes.
Officer Melnikova jumped out first.
"Sweetheart, what's wrong?" she asked.
Emily's tiny body trembled violently.
"There’s a man under my bed," she whispered.
The officers exchanged a quick glance.
"A man?" Kowalev asked gently.
Emily nodded.
"He has a mask."
The child's voice cracked.
"I woke up and saw him crawling underneath my bed. He thought I was asleep."
Most officers hear strange stories from children.
Monsters in closets.
Ghosts in hallways.
Imaginary friends.
But something about Emily was different.
She wasn't confused.
She wasn't exaggerating.
She looked genuinely terrified.
The officers escorted her back upstairs.
Her mother, Rachel, answered the door wearing a robe and an embarrassed expression.
"I'm so sorry," she sighed.
"Emily has a vivid imagination."
Rachel explained that Emily had recently become afraid of sleeping alone.
She claimed to hear noises.
See shadows.
Imagine things.
The officers searched every room.
Closets.
Bathroom.
Kitchen.
Balcony.
Even beneath the child's bed.
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Kowalev almost laughed.
But Melnikova couldn't shake a strange feeling.
The little girl continued staring at the empty space beneath her bed.
Tears filled her eyes.
"I know what I saw."
The room fell silent.
Then Melnikova turned toward Rachel.
"Do you have security cameras in the building?"
Rachel nodded.
"There are cameras in the hallway."
"Let's check them."
None of them knew that within minutes, they would uncover something that would send shockwaves through the entire neighborhood.
Something far worse than a child's nightmare.
