CHAPTER 3 – THE WOMAN WHO STOLE A FAMILY

The ballroom fell into complete silence.
Every guest stood frozen as Eleanor's trembling face filled the giant screens.
Her voice was weak, but every word struck like thunder.
"Dad... if you're watching this, then Lily found you. Please don't interrupt this recording. You only have one chance to learn the truth."
Richard couldn't breathe.
The woman he had mourned for seven years was looking straight into his eyes.
Tears rolled down his face.
"Eleanor..."
The video continued.
"The fire wasn't an accident."
A collective gasp swept across the ballroom.
Margaret instinctively stepped backward.
Richard noticed.
For the first time in years, he truly looked at the woman standing beside him.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't shocked.
She looked terrified.
On the screen, Eleanor continued.
"Someone locked my bedroom door from the outside. I screamed until I couldn't breathe. I thought I was going to die."
Guests exchanged horrified glances.
The media cameras that had been invited to cover the charity event immediately turned toward Margaret.
Eleanor's voice became even steadier.
"But I survived."
The room erupted.
"What?"
"She survived?"
"Then whose body was buried?"
Richard's heart pounded.
He had personally identified the burned body.
At least... he thought he had.
Eleanor answered the question before anyone could ask.
"The body they buried wasn't mine. Someone bribed officials to fake my death because they needed me gone forever."
Richard staggered backward.
His lawyer caught him before he collapsed.
Then came the sentence that changed everything.
"Dad... Margaret wasn't acting alone."
Every eye in the ballroom shifted.
Margaret's face drained of color.
"No..." she whispered.
"No..."
The screen suddenly displayed security footage dated seven years earlier.
It showed Margaret entering the Hawthorne mansion's west wing just minutes before the fire.
Moments later...
A tall man wearing black gloves appeared beside her.
He poured gasoline beneath Eleanor's bedroom door.
Several guests screamed.
Richard clenched his fists until his knuckles turned white.
"Who is he?" he demanded.
The answer came immediately.
The camera zoomed in.
The man's face became crystal clear.
Richard nearly collapsed.
It was Daniel Pierce.
His own Chief Financial Officer.
His most trusted employee for nearly twenty years.
The same man standing only fifteen feet away in the ballroom.
Daniel slowly lowered his champagne glass.
Without saying a word...
He turned and ran.
"Stop him!"
Security charged after him.
Guests scattered in panic as Daniel pushed through the crowd, overturning tables and crashing into musicians.
Outside, tires screeched.
A black SUV exploded through the front gate.
Daniel jumped inside.
The vehicle sped into the night.
Richard stood frozen.
Everything he believed for seven years had been a lie.
His daughter had been hunted.
His family had been betrayed.
His closest advisor had helped cover up a murder.
Then Lily tugged gently on his jacket.
Her tiny voice broke through the chaos.
"Grandpa..."
Richard knelt before her.
She wrapped her small arms around his neck.
"Mommy said you'd protect me."
Richard held her tighter than he had ever held anyone.
"I swear," he whispered through tears.
"No one will ever hurt you again."
At that exact moment...
His chief of security rushed into the ballroom holding a tablet.
"Sir..."
Richard looked up.
"What is it?"
The guard swallowed hard.
"We just searched Eleanor's medical records."
"And?"
The guard hesitated.
Then he spoke the words that left Richard speechless.
"Sir... Lily isn't your only grandchild."
The ballroom went silent once more.
"There are two more children."
Richard stared in disbelief.
"What did you say?"
The guard nodded.
"The records show Eleanor gave birth to triplets."
Richard's heart nearly stopped.
"But only one child has been found..."
The guard slowly looked toward the mansion's front entrance.
"...which means two of your grandchildren are still missing."
