CHAPTER 5 – LILY LEFT A MESSAGE... BUT SHE WASN'T THE ONE WHO WROTE IT

Richard Hawthorne's hands shook so violently he could barely hold the note.

"You found her once. Try again... Grandpa."

"No..." he whispered.

"Lily!"

His desperate scream echoed through the ballroom.

Security teams flooded every hallway.

Every exit was sealed.

Every guest was searched.

But it was as if the little girl had vanished into thin air.

The lead FBI agent rushed toward Richard.

"We've locked down the building."

Richard grabbed him by the collar.

"Then where is my granddaughter?"

The agent hesitated.

"There is one possibility..."

"What?"

"The kidnappers had help from someone inside."

Richard slowly turned.

More than three hundred guests stood frozen.

One of them had betrayed him.

Someone had waited years for this exact moment.

Just then, Richard's phone vibrated again.

This time, it wasn't a text.

It was a live video.

Richard answered immediately.

The screen lit up.

Lily sat in a small wooden chair.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't tied up.

She simply looked frightened.

"Grandpa..."

Richard's voice broke.

"Lily! Are you hurt?"

Before she could answer, a masked man stepped into the frame.

His face remained hidden beneath a black hood.

"You have exactly twenty-four hours."

Richard clenched his fists.

"What do you want?"

The man chuckled.

"The Hawthorne Vault."

Every color drained from Richard's face.

"No."

The masked man smiled.

"I knew you'd recognize the name."

Only four people in the world knew the truth about the Hawthorne Vault.

It wasn't a bank account.

It wasn't a room filled with gold.

It was a secret archive containing decades of evidence against some of the most powerful people in America—politicians, billionaires, judges, and crime bosses who had secretly financed one another for years.

Richard had spent decades collecting it.

It was his insurance policy.

If he handed it over...

Hundreds of dangerous people would walk free forever.

If he refused...

Lily would die.

The call ended.

Silence filled the room.

Richard slowly looked at his chief of security.

"Prepare my helicopter."

The chief frowned.

"Sir... you're not actually considering giving them the Vault?"

Richard answered without hesitation.

"I already lost my daughter."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I'm not burying my granddaughter too."

At that exact moment...

A young FBI analyst burst through the ballroom doors carrying a laptop.

"Sir!"

Richard turned.

"What is it?"

"We enhanced the kidnapper's video."

The analyst pressed one key.

The image zoomed in on the reflection inside a tiny window behind Lily.

Everyone leaned closer.

Richard's heart skipped a beat.

"I know that place..."

The reflection revealed a massive bronze statue shaped like an eagle.

There was only one location in the country with that monument.

Richard whispered the name.

"Black Ridge Academy..."

The FBI agent looked confused.

"What's Black Ridge?"

Richard's face turned pale.

"It was an elite boarding school..."

He paused.

"...for the children of America's richest families."

The analyst swallowed hard.

"It closed eight years ago."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"No."

"It didn't close."

His voice became ice cold.

"It went underground."

Suddenly, another file appeared on the analyst's screen.

A student enrollment list from eight years earlier.

Richard scanned the names...

Then his breathing stopped.

At the very top was one name that should have been impossible.

LILY HAWTHORNE.

Enrollment Date:

Three years before she was officially born.

Richard stared at the screen in disbelief.

Only one question echoed through his mind.

If Lily had been enrolled before she even existed... then who had Richard really rescued at the gala?
